2/28/2009 6:09:53 PM
Whaaaat? so you asked to be laid off from a job you disliked because you had another one lined up only to be told "Sorry we can't hire you afterall"???Wow, shitty. I'm so sorry.
2/28/2009 6:10:46 PM
yea there was a massive layoff at work, and we had a deadline to volunteer for severance...and i had a feeling that i would have been laid off anyway, so i signed up for it when i was told that i would be hiredthen yesterday was my last day at the job i've been at, all emotions are happy and i get home from leaving around lunchtime...then 10 minutes after i get home, my friend that works at the new job tells me that they are suspending all hiring, and i get a call from my would-be boss moments lateryesterday was very gayand today, one of my mom's dogs had a seizure (she has a history of them) and is staying at a vet overnight (she's a toy pomeranian, we've had her about 9 years)A BIRTHDAY TO FORGET

that sucks i know several people this has happened to. well, similar--they've gotten a new job, waited to put in notice at their old job until they were sure new job was secure, new job seemed secure, put in notice at old job, started moving to another state for new job, new job rescinds offer. that leaves...NO job.terrible.
2/28/2009 9:54:43 PM
i think im still in a state of shock about it all, i think back to how much i was talking about looking forward to it with the people at the job i just left (not in a fuck-this-place sorta manner or anything) and then its like "oh yeah...not"i do have about $7k or so that im still owed for last paycheck/unused vacation/severance, but sooner or later i gotta figure something out
2/28/2009 9:58:54 PM
^And no chance for unemployment since they quit. That's shitty.
2/28/2009 9:59:18 PM
that's one good thing i guess....im still eligible for unemployment since it was technically being laid off, even though i volunteered for it
2/28/2009 10:00:02 PM
that is so shitty

I have an extremely similar story but the numbers and aggravation are worse for me, bare with me as it's long.In mid October, they announced our site would be closing and employees would get various levels of severance and COBRA subsidies. My termination date would be January 30th at which point I'd get COBRA (and my wife is on my plan too) coverage for 3 months, PTO paid out, and 10 weeks of severance. The PTO and severance would equal about 16 grand after taxes. At the time, the job market didn't make anal search via hot iron pleasant in comparison and I was looking forward to some time off to get shit done around the house and just chill the fuck out. Early December came and it was apparent the economy was getting worse and the job situation was looking pretty dire when a local manager asked me if I wanted to take a position at another site in Richmond. I'd have to give up the severance (about 10k) but I'd be entitled to a relocation package which included 5k in misc expenses and all the fees for selling my home if I decided to sell it. The situation of the entire company looked pretty bleak at the time, but as best we (myself and my manager, he was 14 years with the company) could tell, it looked like we should be able to survive until mid year. If the rumors about bailout money (from various banks and governments) came true, then the company would probably even be able to weather the entire downturn.I decided to take the job, and within a week or so the bailout money was announced and I felt like I had made a great decision. A colleague of mine happens to live in my neighborhood and was offered a similar deal. So, we both spent considerable amount of time searching for apartments in the Richmond area. We found one, moved in, and we were at the new job 11 days when word came through that the so called bailout money agreement had fallen through and our Germany overloads had filed insolvency in Europe (their Chapter 11 equivalent). It was upon reading this that I became nauseous for a split second. It was like someone had just told me a parent had died. I was then informed on Feb 3rd, 3 days after my original Jan 30 termination date (with severance) that I had a couple hours to clean my desk out, turn my badge in, and vacate the premises. There would be no severance and no COBRA compensation. So, not only would I have originally been owed 16k had I just stayed the original plan, that is now down to about 11k if I get paid my PTO and misc expenses. I also had to fork out 2.5 grand in rent and moving expenses, not to mention all the time and effort gone in to finding a place to stay and moving shit in and out, etc. So, I'm down about 7.5k over what I could have had.Isn't capitalism grand?[Edited on February 28, 2009 at 10:28 PM. I'm so sorry. How shitty. What are you doing now? This thread is scary.
2/28/2009 10:29:44 PM
yea im not sure what would be worse, getting surprised at being laid off or knowing youll be laid off and get surprised that a sure-thing job has been snatched from you
2/28/2009 10:34:08 PM
Well, somewhere along the way my mother managed to instill a sense of fiscal responsibility in me, like some relatively poor rural folks had a choice in the matter anyway. So, unemployment will cover the mortgage payment for 25 weeks with room to spare, we'll be able to eat and live a little off of the wife's small salary, and I have a big enough cushion in liquid accounts to last another 6 months or more on top of the unemployment. If worse comes to worse I can take a distribution from my 401k and survive another year easily. This is without much of a change at all to our lifestyle or me getting part time work to fill in or my wife having to take a second job.
