I have heard that so many people are dead on Everest because folks go up in teams, and each member has paid so much money that they aren't willing to waste their investment by helping the sick or injured back down where they can be helped.
Which is another entry in my book, "Rich people are assholes." 5/28/2009 2:54:57 AM |
Mr. Joshua Swimfanfan 43948 Posts user info edit post |
In regards to the flap a few years ago over the dying climber that everyone passed without helping, they claimed that at such an altitude theres little that you can do to help someone because you're so busy taking care of yourself. They went as far as to call him "effectively dead" when he hit the point of needing help getting down.
and WTF!?!?! Robert Blake was one of the Little Rascals?
For example, the last picture of the body with green boots was cleverly called "Green Boots" and used as a landmark for climbers after he died. He was part of a small Indian military expedition up while working the border.

I wonder how many dead bodies are below a rescue helo's service ceiling? Below is a suspected candidate that may in operation in the area.

Better yet, invest in air rescues with a turboprop and a skyhook system:

Rich people may be assholes, but I bet they don't want to die, and you can probably get a good sum of money from saving their ass. 5/28/2009 3:45:28 AM |

Quote : | "I doubt that helicopter rescue if ever an option due to the setting." | Hovering with any significant payload, would be almost impossible at that altitude. A helicopters rotor system is much more efficient in forward flight than hovering flight, so just because it could reach altitude, wouldn't mean that it would be able to land. Density altitude would be the key factor here.
None of the US built helicopters could pull it off, there might be a Russian one that could, but the factors that you'd be dealing with would put more people at risk than it is worth.

If you're stupid enough to try to climb a really tall and dangerous mountain for no damn reason, you're the only that knowingly put your life at such a risk. At that point it's not up to one of the other dumb assholes trying to climb the mountain to save you. 5/28/2009 8:54:11 AM |

^^ I agree. I also with GrumpyGOP that, in general, rich people are assholes -- but I think he misses the point of how impossible it usually is to actually help someone in that scenario. 5/28/2009 8:58:49 AM |

"Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer is a good look into the complexities of rescues and the ambitions of people that climb these mountains.
I recommend it, moreso than his other popular book "Into the Wild". 5/28/2009 9:06:27 AM |

I imagine that just the wind alone across the mountain wouldn't permit getting close to the surface, it would have to be a winch, basket, and a long line to the tune of at least 200'. The helicopter used would definitely have to be purpose built
I think the skyhook system would really work well for this type of rescue though, and should be a lot safer for the rescuers than trying to helicopter them out (which is really the most important part when trying to save a rich asshole).
There was a good thread I found on a forum here: http://forums.jetcareers.com/general-topics/24650-highest-service-ceiling-helicopter.html
EDIT: If you know you're going to die, why not make all efforts to drag your O2 tank over to a wall, prop yourself up and straddle it. Certainly would be best to mock others in your death.
