I'm looking for a place between Brier Creek and Durham, or even on the airport side of 540, or Leesville Road, etc. etc. - to rent...cannot justify purchasing right now.

My first choice would be about 1000-1200 SF with a garage or detached outbuilding. 2BR/1.5-2 BA. These things don't grow on trees unless you want to live in the middle of Durham or the like...and I don't.

Brier Creek area is LITTERED with apartment complexes, but unfortunately there's no place to store a lot of my stuff like lawn equipment, tools, car shit, etc. And I don't personally like living so damn close to folks. Plenty in my price/size range with amenities like pools, weight rooms, etc.

Or do I spring for a bigger, 3 or 4 bedroom house with all of the features of #1, and try to snag a roomie or two?

A bigger house with some roomies would probably be good for you in these times.

If you were to fall on hard times, I bet you'd feel a lot more comfortable knowing you were only paying $400/mo in rent in a 3br brick ranch house than if you were staying at a $850/mo townhouse with a garage in some new vinyl development.

Of course, the issue is finding good roommates.

Also, about your first choice, it sounds kind of like you want to take over Jeepman's house.

Actually he might still be looking for roommates.

^No. Just got unengaged.

Bad thing is, Jeepman's house is on the wrong side of town. I drive to Butner every day for my job. That and I've just gotten my membership to Durham TechShop, which is right offa Miami Blvd close to GE Aircraft Engines. I'm hoping to spend a LOT of time there.

My neighborhood has some townhomes & houses for rent on the other side. Page Road/TW. Alexander. It is technically in Durham. That intersection is where RTP, Raleigh, & Durham meet. If you are super interested, tomorrow I can walk to that section in the neighborhood and jot down some numbers.

I know several homes here have sheds and most (even the townhomes) have garages. I have no idea what people charge. We have a roomie in our 2400 sf home and charge him 475 flat for everything.

Space is really up to you. Are you going to enjoy a roommate situation? Have you had problems in the past? Are you going to be super loud with all of your "stuff" and have problems with said roommate. If so, maybe one is not an option.

Is the space for your stuff most important? I would probably jot down your top 5 things if you could have everything you want and start from there.

Actually, you are REALLY close to where I am now. I'm on Lumley between Page and Miami, real close to Alexander.

Been driving around, not seeing much. But then I've not looked really hard to begin with. It's pretty much the area I want to stay...just far enough to not drive by this house much.

As far as stuff...I don't have a whole lot anymore because I've moved so much in the last 4 years, and have weeded out a lot. But I'd like to have a little bit of shop space to work in on projects and such (some might be car related). But I've just joined Durham TechShop so it's not that big of a deal.

Any help at all would be great, and much appreciated!

Well, it would definitely be an option. I usually do. You buy the parts tho...unless it's a small fix and I have it or just feelin' generous. and as long as it's not a 1981 Plymouth K car three inches from shitting the bed.

There is a foreclosure in my neighborhood....great price 118,000. My house was just appraised at 198,000 and zillow has that estimated at 178,000.

Let me know if you want the address.

meadows at pagehurst? i sold a good chunk of those places when they were new...

dan, you considered any places like waaay north raleigh towards creedmoor? little more rural/spread out than the briar creek area yet would still be convenient to butner/durham. check out the durham area where mineral springs dead ends into fletchers chapel too, there's a number of rental houses in neighborhoods along there too.

I know someone with a 3brm house outside 540/leesville near St. Francis of Asissi Church.
He usually rents out a room, b/c he is a wine distributor and never there.
Also there is a garage and he works on some kind of classic collector car.

but you have to be very neat, cuase this dude is like anal neat.
I don't know if he has a renter now or not but I can find out if you want.

I was unaware that apartments required lawn care.
