You can now purchase HD movies on iTunes instead of just renting them. Been waiting for this for a long time. 3/23/2009 2:18:43 AM |

too late. Now that netflix and hulu have cheap/free on demand streaming, this development is largely irrelevant 3/23/2009 10:23:37 AM |

^Not to mention the media content on Xbox Live in general. Just why would Apple now do this haha?

I said purchase not rent. Renting HD movies on iTunes/Apple TV has been around for some time.
I, too, have netflix 'cheap' on demand streaming but their library sucks at the moment and the HD selection is even worse. I mainly use it to watch old movies I haven't seen in a while or watch The Office. At least with iTunes I can catch the new releases as soon as they hit shelves on DVD/BluRay

i know. but purchasing is on its way out. $20 to purchase a HD title vs $5 to rent for 24 hours vs $5-15 to on demand stream any of thousands of titles whenever you want, as often as you want. i know what choice i'm going to make.
will apple make gobs of money from this new offering? maybe. but in terms of positioning themselves for the future of the market, this isn't interesting]3/23/2009 11:10:33 AM |

^i have to admit, ever since i bought an appleTV and now have the netflix streaming I have yet to buy a movie on bluray or DVD. There are a few movies I'd still want to own though. I'm assuming the studios are partly responsible for the shitty netflix selection for instant streaming?
I do use the appleTV a lot more than netflix, but netflix is always my first choice because its so much cheaper, but again the new release selection is really lacking. I hope to see that change soon. 3/23/2009 11:26:52 AM |

I've been seriously considering getting an AppleTV just to watch Hulu and NetFlix on. I really hate sitting in front of a computer to watch episodes of House or a few other shows I watch that I've missed.. that would make it a lot easier.
[Edited on March 23, 2009 at 11:38 AM. Reason : not sure if you can watch netflix on a hacked appletv..i assumed you could tho. i know you can hulu] 3/23/2009 11:37:06 AM |

^^I haven't tried the boxee beta on my appletv, but if you put boxee on a hacked appletv and boxee allows you to watch streaming netflix then i don't see why not. 3/23/2009 11:40:22 AM |

There has been a fix out to make it work not long after the "cut-off". Not sure what the big deal is - I have it working. 3/23/2009 2:49:16 PM |
