1995 Nissan Maxima

Crank it and it runs while in park and voluntarily may cut off.

Then you can get it to run and it will sputter and hesitate and wont get over about 2000 RPMs

feels like its got a hang in the thing

any of you know what may be wrong?

its obd1 so they couldnt do a system scan.

does it run in park if you keep your foot on the gas?

if it does, then cuts off when you let off the gas, it might be your IAC valve. usually an easy/cheap fix.

it isn't the IAC.

classic symptom of a bad MAFS or MAFS wiring

go clean it out (with carb cleaner or special electrical parts cleaner avail at autozone etc) and make sure it's completely air dried before you go driving.

most cars you can just unplug the MAF and it will default to speed density mode or something similar and at least run better than it would with incorrect readings from the MAF. worth a shot anyways

I had a 96 Maxima with the exact same symptoms, replaced the knock and oxygen sensors and it was cured.
