I looked at a 2003 Suzuki aerio SX with 47K miles. Priced at 6350. Anyone have any experience with these? I used to drive around an old suzuki sidekick that you couldn't kill. Is this an ok deal? Any other suggestions for hatchbacks? (looking at older Golf's or subarus)

I don't have any experience with suzuki cars personally, but I've seen lots of very new looking suzuki cars being parted out on craigslist. Probably snapped timing belts. I like hatchbacks in general...a car is useless if you can't carry a washing machine in it...or on it.

I had a 88.5 Samurai and that thing was bullet-proof. I'm not under the impression that the newer Suzuki's are anywhere near that reliable.

^^ I was looking at an aveo. Have you had any issues with yours? I've read a few reviews that said they were a bit of trouble.

no, it drives great for me. Of course 0-60 is going to take a bit, it is a 4 cylinder after all. I bought the 07 model, new. So it is probably still newish for any problems to arise. It has about 11,840 miles on it right now.

When I was researching it, people kept saying it sucks in the ice and snow. So I just don't drive in the snow, problem solved.

there are >10 used cars that are better vehicles, will last longer, and are cheaper than a new aveo.

what?

seriously?

I had an aveo hatchback as my rental car for 5 weeks while my 4runner was in the shop. This is by far the worst car i've ever driven. And my first car was an '82 plymouth reliant k car.

and a car that small should get way better fuel economy than it gets.

^if you mean a 0-60mph time comparable to an 11sec car, then no. If you mean a 0-60mph time compared to a mid/low 14-second family sedan (which is very respectable), then there's not THAT much of a difference imo.

^^ no not really, but come to think of it, some mid '80s 924/924S are faster than modern day hatches/sedans. anything with a 7.x 0-60 isn't exactly slow, but I also wouldn't call it fast either (IMO). There are even some vehicles with v6's making more than 160hp that take longer than 8 seconds to reach 60mph.

I was just thinking of a nice hatch. I really liked the sportiness of the 924/944, though the hatches don't provide much utility (while they are long and wide, it lacks depth).

bought for $5,500. 0-60 in 6.8, 135mph top speed, 30mpg on highway, 2600lbs. Great in snow, pretty capable on mud/dirt (as evidenced this past wknd, lol) and fun on the track. With seats folded down has held 7 tires/wheels and 2 mountain bikes (not at same time). Fits 2 mtn bikes in trunk with seats up if you take off the wheels.

Hatchbacks are VERY capable and versatile cars They just don't really make them like that used to. A new Civic Si has comparable performance but weighs 300lbs more and is a coupe.

lol, actually 9 my friend. But after 140,000 miles (that I put on the car) with things failing only due to old age and never broke down I think you can say I've gotten well over my money's worth.

What exactly made it the worse car you ever drove?

I personally can't really complain about the gas mileage, it is nearly double my last car ('94 Lumina).

ok. thanks. Just checking to make sure it wasn't something actually serious like future engine problems or something.

I don't have any of those 'issues', except looking like a ped-egg appearance.

Mine came with one, not that I use it because this is the first car I've seen that comes with a built-in AUX-input so I can play my ipod natively without the need for a stupid tape deck or those FM transmitter things.

well, in that thread, i was mostly bitching about that particular vehicle as far as cd player and power windows/locks... i'm sure it's available as an option.

Consumer reports ranked it the lowest in the under $20k sedan class.. FWIW

Placing a car that costs 12-13k in a comparison with 20k cars is stupid. As an engineer you know this.

It had no chance before it even started!

you know what? i had no idea how much one of those shitcans cost.

I paid like $120 a week to rent it.

and i was ripped off.

GM should be embarrassed to have one of their logos on that car (especially considering they didn't really make it)

Then again, i doubt it's much worse than any other GM vehicle...
