Look for a freelance web designer for an up and coming website. Ideal candidate would be someone with a strong knowledge of java, PHP, CSS, and obviously HTML.

Website functions would include, but wouldn't be limited to:

1. the ability for users (band's) to post video/music (requiring a proprietary media player), photos, news, and most importantly tour information.
2. a forum
3. music charts/ some sort of ranking structure

hmmm, if you're talking a custom flash player skin and something that's easy to update you're talking big cash there. We can talk for around $2k. If that's your price range I'll PM.

I don't know much about coding and programming languages... thats why I'm looking for someone else to do this for me. If I knew what to use, and how to use it... I'd do this myself.

If you want your own flash player thats going to be expensive.
Not to mention UI design / software/database design

how are you hosting this? Doesn't sound like this is something thats going to work on a shared hosting service.

If you can post your budget it would be a lot easier for us (me) to say if its feasible at that budget or not. Or you can PM me if you dont want to post it in here.

i'd probably be way over my head on this project... maybe some sort of partnership would be the best bet.

^^ yup. Post your budget, then probably triple it to get into the ballpark of what you're looking for.

Just for a custom flash player depending on complexity can be $400+. If you're at all popular or want to have HD vids up you're talking at least virtual machine and probably low-grade dedicated. That's ~$200-$400/month my cost. Then you want a website built around it, including design, possibly photography, possibly videography? $$$$$

You sound like a used car salesman. Since when do you need to know someone's budget to provide them a quote?

^actually this is usually the first question I ask. You can build a great design on a static HTML site for a couple hundred bucks and embed youtube or vimeo all day to it. Making that jump to a custom breakout player is big bucks for a very little aesthetic gain. People that don't understand the sheer volume of added work and code will never pay for it. I try to give the best I can for the money they want to spend, because in the end I want their money.

quotes I have received recently have been around 2k. Thats fine and dandy for a business I think, but for an individual... thats rather ridiculous. However, I do understand that what I'm asking for is a lot of coding.

As it stands now, I'm talking to a few people about a possible partnership. I think based on my budget, this would be the smartest option. I'd handle costs for the domain, hosting, handle marketing/advertising, and oversee design. The programmer would just handle coding the site. If this is of interest to anyone, I'd be glad to pitch the site to you (with an confidentiality agreement). If not, I thank you all for your time and responses.

I don't know where you shop for used cars but doesn't sound like any where i've heard of.

If someone comes to you with a whole list of things that they want and you're thinking $20,000 but they're thinking $2000. what do you think is going to happen when you give them a quote? If you want to be able to work with someone to meet their needs and budget, its very helpful to know what that budget is so you can explain to them why it would cost so much and what things they can do without for now and upgrade to later when the budget allows.

this alone would be more than $2000 to develop a real ranking system and charting system.

all of you guys bitching about pricing certainly don't know shit about establishing a good relationship from the start with a potential client. you shouldn't belittle them or make them feel like a jackass, even if they ask you to do something for FREE. if it's definitely below what you're willing to agree upon, just smile and say you aren't able to do the project under the specifications at the time, and wish them well on their business venture. one day, when they do have a workable budget for a project, they'll give you a call... if you don't have the "my shit's too good for you" mentality.

wait ... not to be a dick ... but what makes this site different from MySpace, Reverb Nation or Pure Volume?

Sounds like a Flesh of the Stars/Mr. Skin debacle.

^^I'm not going to discuss that publicly for obvious reasons. If you are interested in a possible partnership and accepting a confidentiality agreement then I would be glad to share the differentiators.
