The possibility of a snowy Super Bowl is for some reason very scary to the NFL.
I think it would be fucking awesome. 4/15/2009 8:49:54 PM |

I think it would be big for the city. Just think of what it would do for local business.
They could have special events in conjunction with Discovery Place and the Bobcats.

I hear we're getting it after Baltimore hosts Super Bowl 509, otherwise known as Super Bowl DIX

it would be big for any city, we just currently arent a big enough city to support it
Meineke Car Care Bowl? Check
ACC Tournament? Check
Super Bowl? Thats a whole different magnitude
^its not just about the stadium...in fact thats a minor detail relatively...its more about the ability for a city to be able to semi-comfortably accomodate a 2-week influx of a quarter million people...Charlotte doesn't have the infrastructure for that

i would say they want to hold it in locations where people would actually want to visit, which isn't charlotte (but isnt detroit either) 4/15/2009 8:55:12 PM |

I don't think Charlotte meets the requirement for the superbowl. It's something like the average temperature in Jan/Feb must be over 50 degrees for any non-dome stadium. If it's a dome stadium it doesn't matter. 4/15/2009 9:38:12 PM |

yep, not to mention it probably doesn't have enough of the infrastructure needed (hotels, parking, restaurant facilities)

oh I know. what I meant is they keep building new stadiums in citys that have shown they can handle a super bowl. Dallas for instance gets the XLV bowl. Not sure how accurate this is but it seems like Charlotte should get some consideration since it is more populace than a few cities who has held super bowls.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_population
Higher population than - Miami, New Orleans, Pasadena, Pontiac, Tampa, Stanford, Minneapolis, Tempe, and Glendale
Density has a lot to do with it though I'm sure.

Charlotte also has a larger city population than Atlanta.
But the metro population (the one that counts) of Atlanta, like most of the cities you listed, blows Charlotte off the damn map.
The other big sticking point is the indoor/retractable-roof arena. Which Charlotte wouldn't have for at least 20 years.4/15/2009 10:26:34 PM |
dweedle All American 77386 Posts user info edit post |
i dont see Charlotte ever really aiming to have a retractable roof type of stadium either... I think its only reasonable to have one in an environment with extreme conditions 4/15/2009 10:29:40 PM |
Ernie All American 45943 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, there's really no reason for one in Charlotte and, anyway, BoA is aging well.
Speaking of Minnesota and retractable roofs and whatnot, what the fuck are the Twins thinking moving to an open-air stadium. Could you imagine a late October game played outside in Minneapolis?

The Vikings have a new downtown retractable roof stadium in the works too (and it's super fly). I guess the Gophers are gonna be the Metrodome's only tenants, unless there's a Minneapolis arena team or WNBA team or something. 4/15/2009 11:14:13 PM |

^ The University of Minnesota built a new on-campus stadium, called TCF Bank Stadium, that will open next season. It will have a capacity of 50,300. It was designed to resemble Minnesota's old Memorial Stadium that the Gophers played in from 1924 to 1981. The stadium was torn down, but it's archway entrance was preserved and installed in the interior atrium over the entrance to a small museum at the McNamara Alumni Center.
The stadium was designed to support future expansion to seat up to 80,000 people. It has an open end that gives views of downtown Minneapolis.

one of my favorite things to do when going to a new city (one i havent been to) is to at least ride by the stadiums
i went to phoenix recently and toured Chase Field...it was pretty cool, we got to go down into locker rooms and the dugout and they have this restaurant/bar behind home plate underneath all the seats the video screen was like ridiculously big and a pretty fuckin clear picture too 4/16/2009 12:15:42 AM |

Its not a population issue. Charlotte is not a tourist destination, so we are not prepared for such things.
Do you know what is considered the #1 tourist site in the state of North Carolina? Is it the Outer Banks? Historic Wilmington? Grandfather Mountain? RTP? Nope.

Number of people might be similar, although most of them are probably in north Charlotte / Concord and not downtown near the stadium...also the majority of people who come for race week are average folks, whereas most people who come into town for a SB are huge ballers...we can have a little concert in Tryon St and have some beer stands, but for the SB you better have a lot more lavish stuff
