'04 Chevy Colorado, Ext Cab, 4x4, Z71, 53k miles

High pitched, metallic scraping sound whenever I'm passing 1400 RPMs. Sounds like its coming from under, just in front of the cab. Occurs in all gears, not in neutral. I can hear it best when going through 1st gear - not sure if that's part of a symptom or just a fact of other noise covering it up.

Sounds like it could be the alt/ps/water pump or the idler on the belt driven stuff on the front of the motor.

Pull the belt and see if the noise goes away, if so then spin the accesories till you find one that makes noise or is difficult to spin.

it is nothing close to that or any type of belt squeak. it's a metallic scraping noise.

^^there is a metal heat shield around the cat. when you get vibrations at speed, it could start scraping around.

i'm not saying that's what it probably is, just saying that 69's post is legit

UPDATE:

It has something to do with the muffler/tailpipe being loose/vibrating against something. Got my roommates to help listen & locate. If you grab one of the tail pipe supports and push/pull it the noise changes/goes away depending on how/where you move it...

Guess I'll run it to a shop and have them lift it & weld another support in

well I finally stopped by Bob's this afternoon. got there and 5 minutes later I was leaving with the problem solved. the guy just welded in a new support which fixed the excess movement of the tail pipe + vibrating. he wasn't even going to charge me anything (though it's not like it took any amount of time or materials), but I still gave him some money, which I'm hopeful that he just pocketed.

+1 for Bob's
