I've got two hard drives that came out of my old Dell (XP) that I'd like to get some stuff from. The Dell won't boot any more, the boot drive is fucked. The slave drive that was in there is fine, however. I was told that simply putting it into an external enclosure (or using a SATA/USB cable) would make it act more-or-less like an external drive, and that it would show up as such on my mac.

It didn't. Does anyone have any suggestions?

first install MacFuse. It's a platform for installing non-native file systems - http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
Then install NTFS-3G, which is a MacFuse plugin to read NTFS drives - http://www.ntfs-3g.org/


actually - looks like you might not need MacFuse. Just try the NTFS-3G program first

also, you don't need ntfs3g for NTFS read support - that comes natively with OS X.

if the physical disk doesn't show up in disk utility, either you've got a jumper out of place, your external IDE/SATA controller doesn't play well with OS X, or your drive is fubar.
