What is your favorite sandwich combination? (i.e. what type of bread or roll you like, lunch meats, cheese, veggies, chips and drink) I'm looking for new ideas to try for lunch and what goes well together.

Here lately my lunches have been the same old same old, kinda slightly boring. Hit me with what you got!

Some ways to spruce up your sandwiches:

Spicy/fancy mustards in various flavors.
Honey mustard.

Italian seasoning tastes great on a turkey sandwich.

Spinach leaves
Sprouts
Cucumbers

Oil and vinegar.

And I like to toast it every now and then to change it up.

Mayo and banana sandwich is the traditional southern way. It's delicious! Also, peanut butter and banana either in sandwich form or just peanut butter smeared onto a banana is also delicious.

turkey, avocado, red onion, lettuce, any cheese really, and a little bit of bacon if you're feeling decadent.

it's only good with some good homegrown maters. those dry milly things you buy at the food lion don't belong in mater sammiches.

sauerkraut isn't just for reubens -- try it on other sandwiches
cream cheese isn't just for bagels -- make an herbed or spiced cream cheese and spread it on toast for a sandwich
BBQ sauce isn't just for grilling -- use it like you would use mustard
Also good is a smoked whitefish salad sandwich

The tomato must be perfectly ripe -- even better: organic and home-grown. I absolutely love sandwiches with my home-grown tomatoes on toasted whole wheat bread with salt, fresh ground pepper, and a little mayo.

yeah, it does not work at all with store bought tomatoes or any picked prior to ripe.

[PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT]do NOT put your tomatoes in the fridge. ever.[/PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT]

you don't eat just one sandwich either, you eat like 2-4

Tomato sandwiches are a staple of mine in the summertime. You have to toast the bun and do a little mayo/salt/pepper/garlic.

you all eat them on whole wheat or white? i usually like whole wheat, but i think it might cover up the tomato taste somewhat

My gf had a sandwich the other day that was fantastic (I ended up eating a good bit of it)--\
Fresh roasted turkey (not the deli sliced stuff, but carved like thanksgiving turkey) with bacon, swiss, roasted tomato, mushrooms, arugula, and saffron aioli, on toasted wheat. Delicious--using arugula instead of lettuce was a brilliant idea. Found at Southern Rail in Carrboro, but could be made at home (maybe minus the saffron aioli).

Had one myself at village deli last week that was really good, one of their daily specials--egg salad, smoked salmon, fresh spinach, and herbed cream cheese, on multigrain ciabatta. Really good.

On the topic of egg salad, a great simple sandwich is egg salad and sliced avocado on toasted wheat. Not exactly low-fat, but very tasty.

For lunch today- went with a store-bought bagel, munster cheese, bacon, tomato, turkey, chipotle mayo, used the foreman as kind of a "pannini maker" of sorts.

I will be repeating in the very near future.

Anyone know a good recipe for chicken salad, or a good place to buy it? I've only had like 1 chicken salad sandwich in my life and it wasn't bad. Does the hairy teet sell some decent stuff? I don't think food lion has it and even if they did I I don't think I would buy it.

^ I don't know about the best places to buy chicken salad as far as food stores go but the farmer's market restaurant and village deli (in Cameron Village) have the BEST chicken salad!

^The chicken salad from Teeter's deli is pretty good, though not very cheap.

For *really* good chicken salad, go to Neomonde and get some as takeout there (they sell by the pound as well as for dinner plates/combos). They use golden raisins, walnuts, celery, cinnamon, and some other spices...fucking delicious.

I also like the use of grapes instead of raisins, but I can't remember offhand who does that.

^I want to say something like $5.99/lb, maybe? And you can get it in containers, not only on sandwiches. I'll often go to neomonde and get containers of chicken salad, hummus, and tabouli, and some pita bread, and make 3 or 4 meals out of it.

WRT those mentioning PB & Banana sandwiches further up in the thread--I also enjoy those quite a bit. A twist on that which makes a GREAT snack is made thusly:

-get some Wasa Crispbread (these muligrain crackery things--very crispy/crunchy)
-spread some peanut butter upon it (I have been using Smucker's Natural lately but anything will do)
-slice up banana (approx. half banana per cracker, they're big) and put on top of the PB
-drizzle with honey

damn good.

lightly roast some sliced almonds
spread lingonberry jam on some whole wheat + seed bread (holla if you want some homemade - it ain't free, though)
+ sprouts
+ turkey
+ provolone
+ cracked pepper
+ said almonds
+ lingonberry jam on the 2nd piece of bread

After I made this sandwich the first time, I tried my damndest to live off it for almost two weeks.

Find you some homemade bread and butter pickles (thanks, grandaddy!). They do wonders for a sandwich.
