I just bought a external hd (WD passport)...its in FAT32 format...should i convert to NTFS or leave it as FAT32? I'm not sure which is better.

are you going to be putting files larger than 4gb on there (HD movies, for example)? if so, NTFS is your only option...past that, it really doesn't matter, i don't think

FAT32 integrity is pretty garbage and everything can read/write ntfs these days. definitely go with ntfs

Unless you install the drive in the PS3, I don't think it will make a difference whether it's NTFS or FAT32 (other than files size restrictions mentioned before).

You can hookup a fat32 ext hdd to a ps3 to play movies, pictures, music.

but why would you do that when you can just stream it across the network? DLNA actually works fairly well...

OS X has been able to read NTFS partitions for a while now (along with every other unix variant out there).

for write support, someone ported ntfs-3g over to the MacFUSE model:

I'm saying he could do that with fat32 but not ntfs, not that he should do it, just that he can.

^you can still use WinFS. Just because they stopped development on it 4 years ago doesn't mean it's inoperable. You can still download the 2006 Beta if you are a MSDN subscriber.

Some of the core ideas of WinFS have found their way into Win7 (libraries), but rather than being at a filesystem kernel level, this functionality is being done as a middle-tier solution (from the very very little I know).

If you have the time to spare go download it or find a torrent, it's still a really interesting (and working) filesystem.
