Some banks offer it free...there is one here where kids can play a game by guessing how much they have...it prints out a slip after it counts it....and then you take it to the teller...dont have to have a bank account.

when i moved a few months ago, i used coinstar to deal with a ton of change in exchange for an amazon gift card with no fee -- i realize it doesn't give cash directly with no charge, but there were plenty of options for gift cards at places i normally shop (amazon, cvs, etc) -- was worth it for me

Don't let coins accumulate in the first place:
Before you leave to go shopping, put 3 quarters and 4 pennies in your pocket. Then, simply don't return with more than 3 quarters and 4 pennies in your pocket. Ex: If your total ends in .68, round up to the nearest .25, in this case .75. Then note the one's digit mod(5), in this case .03. So, you would give .78, or 3 quarters and 3 pennies, getting back one dime. Of course, after many separate purchases, you'll sometimes end up with 3 quarters and 4 pennies once again, but not more.

In other words, if AFTER you receive your change, you find that you have either 5 or more pennies, or 4 or more quarters, then you're doing it wrong.

(Note: This method is beneficial to one's arithmetic skills, and is known to combat or delay alzheimers.)

(Additional note: Contrary to the message in many commercials, cash is MUCH quicker than plastic.)

SECU recommends that you deposit it first into an account because they wanted to encourage people to save. When we had the old system (pre- December 2008), this was a "requirement" because there was no other way to track the coin sorter funds. Now, with the current system, actual deposits are not needed since members are pulled up into session. Some branches still require a deposit first, however, this is the perogative of each branch manager.

I dont mind the coinstar fee. I dump my lose change in a box. When it gets heavy, I fill a big cup with the change and go to Harris teeter. Normally amounts to $40-$65. Thats a decent dinner out. Not worth my time to roll it. To each his/her own, however.

shmorri2 already addressed this, but you don't have to deposit it. The Hammond Rd and Centennial Pkwy branches both let you take cash.

i have a quart mason jar that i keep all my change in. when it fills up, i take it to my grandaddy and he gives me cash for it. for some reason he just loves having tons of rolled coins stockpiled .

anyway, we sit down at the kitchen table and roll it all by hand. a whole mason jar takes the two of us no more that 20 or 30 minutes. keep in mind he has arthritis so he's slow and we're talking the whole time too. just pour it out on the coffee table or on a towel on the floor and roll it while you watch TV. it's easy.

^^ Gift cards are not free. They are $1.00. Also, the visa "upholds" can be a real inconvenience because you have to constantly keep track of what you are spending because otherwise you may have your card declined. Gift cards are okay for retail and online purchases. They are not okay for gas stations, rentals, hotels, or restaurants (i mean, you can use them there still, but then you've got to deal with the uphold system... )

fifth third bank does it at certain locations. you have to have an account there though. the one on creedmoor rd has one. they have coinstar machines, that print out a receipt and you get cash back at the counter.

I fall into that camp. For some reason I find it kind of calming to roll coins--perhaps it appeals to my sense of order (which is suppressed most of the time in my generally messy life). And, even though it's your money in the first place, it feels like you've found free money when you're done.

I believe BB&T and probably most banks do this for free. Even if you have to deposit it, assuming you are a member and have money in your account, you can always withdraw the same amount while you are there...
