I've found it to be pretty overpriced for stuff that's been sitting on a counter all day.
I prefer Nur Deli if I'm jonesing for some middle-eastern cuisine. The Kofta fucking amazing. 5/14/2009 7:09:34 PM

last time i was nur (monday i think) one of the food prep ladies had a huge open sore on her wrist. yuck. at least it wasn't actively pussing i guess.
theres a place in north raleigh called aladdin's (six forks/millbrook) that's 10X better than both nur and neomonde...though out of the two i guess i like neomonde better. 5/14/2009 7:22:07 PM

yep, totally agree. They spoiled me on couscous, and now I generally don't like it from anywhere else, and especially the dried stuff you make yourself.
I think they have a few keys 1) I think the tomatoes are soaked in vinegar or something. They are very sweet and rich, so they add great flavor to the couscous, but are not over-powering 2) They use just the right amount of olive oil to wetten it up. It's not too wet, not too dry 3) they must have some kind of special black-pepper. You can tell there is not much in it, but it gives a great kick.
FYI, they must use a different recipe or something in the Cary/Morrisville Neomonde. Every time I get couscouse from there it's never as good as from the Raleigh store.
Quote : | "I've found it to be pretty overpriced for stuff that's been sitting on a counter all day." |
the turnover there is so fast because they're always busy, so the stuff shouldn't be sitting out for too long
Quote : | "I prefer Nur Deli if I'm jonesing for some middle-eastern cuisine." |
I got some olives from there a while ago, and decided to get a gyro too. I asked for a side of couscous (or maybe hummus, i don't remember), and the girl taking my order looked at me strange, then started laughing. Then she turned to the girl making the orders and said something in Arabic or whatever, and they both had a real good laugh about it. I had no idea what was going on, then she told me "Couscous is Egyptian. We are from Morocco." oooohhhhkay? It was good natured, but I didn't think it was really that hilarious, and surely i'm not the first person to ever ask for couscous from what I thought was a middle-eastern deli. 5/15/2009 3:35:24 PM

Wow, I think the couscous at the Morrisville location is the bomb. I need to try it out at the Raleigh location.
Is the Raleigh location open for something other than lunch? Like, 6pm on a Friday - would I be able to stop in and get some take-out? 5/15/2009 3:37:23 PM

well, it's entirely possible that the Cary couscous is just "different", but not necessarily better or worse. I just got used to the Raleigh couscous and I like it so much, I wasn't happy when the stuff in Cary tasted different. I don't know - they might be the same, or maybe I've just gone on bad days, or maybe it just depends on what you're used to.
they're open till 9 Mon-Sat http://www.neomonde.com/about/locations.aspx 5/15/2009 3:48:26 PM

maybe she said "we are Egyptian. Couscous is from Morroco". I don't remember.
but that doesn't seem right, because couscous is definitely a middle-eastern thing, right? Which would include Egyptian food. The Neomonde people are from Lebanon I think, so I'm guessing couscous is native to Lebanon too.

i like neomonde and jasmin
i want to try sitti
i usually just end up getting a mediterranean sampler type thing whenever i go out. with like hummus, baba ghanouj, falafel, etc. though i don't think neomonde has falafel. not sure about jasmin. never had it at either. but i know neomonde has stuffed grape leaves! i've always enjoyed their food, but i don't really get anything too difficult and i feel like the pita/hummus are probably the best things there!
though i always want to sample the desserts. wish there was a dessert sampler ![](images/smile.gif)
this snack mix stuff neomonde has on the market side is really, really good too. 5/15/2009 4:49:07 PM

i also love their mjadarah (sp.?), cabbage delight, chicken salad (those sweet grapes do it for me), blackbean/chick pea salad, tabouli, and generally everything else i've tried. some stuff is about as good as you think it'd be by looking at it, but much of it is surprisingly tasty, with complex flavors and depth.
i usually get the make-your-own platter, and just figured out what i like most by trying everything over time.
plus they have great hummous 5/15/2009 4:51:33 PM

neomonde definitely has falafel. i get kibbeh nearly everytime i go, it's a beef and lamb mixture made up into little patties.
that majadreh (sp?) you're talking about - is that the lentils and rice stuff? cuz that is the bomb!

it wasn't overpriced until sometime in september last year when they raised the prices on their sampler platter and lunch box special by about $2. then it became overpriced. now, a lunch box special (half sandwich, 2 sides, 1 pastry) is freaking $9.68 after tax, and that's too much for lunch. but the food is good, so i continue to go there at least once a week ![](images/beatup.gif) 5/15/2009 5:04:58 PM

yeah mjadarah is that brown lentil/onion stuff they keep on the warm side, you ever get it with yogurt? it's great like that too
for the past few weeks i've been going there ~twice a week ![](images/beatup.gif) only been to the raleigh location though
before that like once every 3 months for the last couple years...not sure why the sudden increase, but i'm probably gonna head there in 30 minutes or so. i also didn't know they had falafel, i'll probably try it this time

both this time and the last time I went to neomonde, I saw this same person.
I noticed them last week because they looked to be about 6 months pregnant, smoking, and wearing an awful, awful outfit for a belly that size (high-waisted skirt with the uniform style buttons in two rows, 1/3 of the way in, like this). Then I thought "Well, maybe they're just fat, not smoking while pregnant"
I saw them today. Same skirt, even.
