The Entertainment thread got me thinking...there are some pretty cliche things that happen in sports that get really [old] after a while...some of them are great when your team does it but it pisses you the fuck off when its done against you.
I'll start off with half-court buzzer beaters from otherwise unproductive players 5/21/2009 11:03:59 AM |

My least favorite sports cliché is when the ball is round or the playing field is rectangular. Or maybe when someone scores. Or maybe when there are coaches. 5/21/2009 11:11:55 AM |

i think the worst part about sports cliches is when they get used in the business world.
Ok gang, lets go out there and make some sales. and remember, we are going to give it 100% and leave it all out on the field! 5/21/2009 11:13:53 AM |

see: Brass Monkey's gameday or post-game commentary in most sports (at least the ones I see) - he talks like he's aspiring to be the next Dick Vitale. Not trying to hate on him or anything because I like a lot of his NC State related contribution on here... but sometimes I read a post by him and think, "There's no way anybody actually talks like that."
specifically though, I fucking hate "jump out of the gym" - actually if you're interested in reading a bunch of sports cliches, check out David Thompson's autobiography, shit is brutal 5/21/2009 11:15:11 AM |

or how about when players are asked
"are you concerned at all about mvp, heisman, breaking records etc etc talk?"
players respond with "man i dont care just as long as we get the 'W'"
bullshit, i wish someone would come out and just say they do care 5/21/2009 11:16:44 AM |

When a player has made a lot of free throws/extra points/field goals/shoot out goals in a row and the announcer mentions it, and the play subsequently misses his next attempt
then the other announcer says "You jinxed him !"

Also when an active player/coach on a non playoff team is guest analyizing for the playoff coverage
and they ask him questions that if he answered truthfully would make him seem critical of other players
of course a batter isn't going to say a pitcher has lost 5 miles on his heater if he has to face him next year
because he'll probably get one in the ribs 5/21/2009 11:19:12 AM |

Not sure if this is really a cliche
But when the "super knowledgeable" announcer's Keys the Game/Victory for a team are basically score more points then the other team, or something that is glaringly obvious like "It will really be a key for them tonight if they are able to get offensive rebounds."
John Madden was the king of this.
Def. not a cliche, but it pisses me off either way. 5/21/2009 11:46:32 AM |

Tyler Hansborough wills it into the basket
or
You can defend against Tyler Hansborough, but you can't defend against his will
or
Any variation on the theme.
My favorite: You can bench Tyler Hansborough, but you can't bench his will!
