New Metroid game just announced today. It is being developed by Team Ninja, so think Ninja Gaiden + Metroid. From the trailer, it seems a lot more fast paced than the Metroid: Prime games. Samus finally talks!!!!

V Yeah exactly. The Prime series was perfect, if they had made another one like it, it would have gotten stale. I like where this new one is going.

holy crap wasn't expecting this, it seems a hell of a lot more narrative than atmospheric but I'm still intrigued, they don't have much to lose after the prime series turned out so well 6/2/2009 2:19:05 PM |

I'm still more excited for the Metroid Prime Trilogy. I never played 2 or 3. I've never played a new gen Ninja Gaiden game so I'm not sure what I think of this. 6/2/2009 5:10:10 PM |

I've never played the Ninja Gaiden series, but I here those games can be incredibly hard. I don't want a lot of hand-holding, but I don't want this game to be throw-controller-at-wall difficult either.
Either way, I'm very excited about this game. I can't wait for more details to come out. 6/2/2009 8:13:18 PM |

I'm not sure I'd really call this metroid but it definetly looks like a cool game, why not just take some elements of the series and merge them with something else 6/6/2009 10:44:28 PM |

The Ninja Gaiden games were hard, but once you learned how to play effectively it wasn't that bad. You just had to learn exactly when to attack, when to dodge, and when the block. The learning curve was steep but once you got the hang of it, it was awesome. 6/8/2009 3:39:51 PM |

Game is out in about two weeks!
Latest trailer includes a recap of Metroid through Super Metroid. Looks like Other M takes place directly after Super Metroid.

Yep, at the end of Metroid II Samus killed the Queen Metroid and was about to destroy the last egg when it hatched. Since there were no other Metroids around it saw Samus as it's mother. 8/18/2010 1:33:31 PM |

that's kind of my philosophy, if it's one thing that you can count on to always be solid it's the nintendo main first party franchises, only thing that worried me was the look of samus on some of the screenshots, it looks like they might be going for that 15 yr old asian face with blonde hair type that every lame kiddie character in the last final fantasy game had 8/31/2010 5:38:16 PM |

started this up at lunch today but didn't get to play very long, but it's great so far. there was one point where I got held up because I was too dumb to realize you had to go to first person view to activate something and that ate up a lot of time... looks good though. finally got to play... it is very easy so far so i hope it gets harder.
the only gripe i have is that the guy has to "authorize" you to use your weapons instead of finding them and upgrading them yourself. and I felt kinda cheesy watching the cutscenes at the beginning 8/31/2010 9:35:55 PM |
ShinAntonio Zinc Saucier 18947 Posts user info edit post |
All the reviews so the cutscenes are really melodramatic and that's basically true so far. I've died a lot already. You can't mess around with enemies, especially since you can only heal at save points. Makes combat exciting.
First person mode is kind of annoying. You basically have to guess when the game wants you to use missiles and if you're wrong you're going to get walloped. 8/31/2010 10:33:05 PM |
Wraith All American 27257 Posts user info edit post |
Agreed with the whole concept of the dude having to "authorize" weapons... yeah this monster is about to kill me... I could take it out if I had a few bombs but Adam didn't say I could use them so I guess I'll just die.
Aside from that, the first person mode is a little annoying since you can't walk around while in it. Would it really have been that difficult to just attach the nunchuck and let you walk around with that? It's a pain in the ass when an enemy gets close to you and you wanna use missiles, you have to run away, turn around, enter first person, then use a missile. I still haven't gotten the hang of the finishing move where you jump on them... apparently you can only do it when they are weak but you don't really have any way of knowing that they are weak.
Graphics and cutscenes look amazing, the intro cutscene remake of the fight against Mother Brain was awesome. And the 15 yr old Samus that jprince was talking about is actually a flashback of when Samus was young. I'm glad that they are going into her history, her background has been a pretty big mystery in every Metroid game. 8/31/2010 10:50:54 PM |
umbrellaman All American 10892 Posts user info edit post |
I like this game so far, but honestly it's not quite as good as I thought it would be.
They've noticeably kicked up the difficulty in this game compared to the few previous games. I've already died several times, typically because I'll have 2 or 3 boss fights in a row and I haven't been able to retreat to a save station to get all of my health back up. This game definitely doesn't hold your hand. It can get frustrating at times, but it's my first time playing, so really all I need to do is get better at playing it.
The combat is pretty good. I've yet to get decent enough at it, but it's awesome seeing Samus dodge around and blast the shit out of everything. I kinda wish the controls for first-person perspective were a little smoother (why do I have to hold down B to move my view around?), but I guess I'm too used to Prime 3's controls. I also used B in that game to fire my gun, so it was a tad confusing at first when I wanted to lock onto something and shoot.
The primary thing that's turning a great game into an okay one are those stupid fucking sections where you have to look around in first-person. It's almost like you have to get that shit pixel perfect, or else it doesn't count. Nevermind that I don't know what the fuck I'm suppose to be looking for. I spent at least 5 minutes looking around clueless on just the first one, and finally I gave up and looked it up online. Some kind of hint would be nice during these parts, eg., Samus could mutter to herself "let's see if I can find id markings on this ship's hull." Is anybody having this much difficulty? Because frankly, it's pissing me off and I feel like these sections do nothing but slow down the pacing.
Another complaint so far is that the VAs kinda suck. I wasn't expecting Emmy award-winning performances or anything, but everybody sounds like they're just phoning it in. Samus's VA especially sounds this way, and her performance is poor enough that I'd have rather that she had no speaking parts like she did in the Prime games. Could Nintendo not get ahold of Jennifer Hale or something?
And finally, I hope there's a way to skip these cutscenes the next time I play this game, because all of them have been full of cheese imho. I appreciate that they want to fill in the gaps of Samus's past, but so far the dialog isn't really doing it justice.
All in all, it's a pretty good game so far, I'm just not yet sure that it's worth the 50 bucks I dropped for it. It's certainly a different Metroid experience; I haven't decided if that's good or bad, all I know is that's it's different. Some things I could certainly do without (the parts where you have to look around are chief among them). I'll just have to play all the way through and see.
^And yeah the authorize bullshit is a flimsy excuse to use some of my gear. I'm running through the lava level, slowly dying from heat stroke, and I can't have Varia because Asshole Malkovich won't give me permission?

i agree wholeheartedly with all umbrellaman said...
i was excited to get this game but it makes me want to go back and replay prime 3.
the prime series was way better IMO, both storyline and controls...
i almost feel like i'm playing a super nintendo game or n64 game at times. i don't like the fact that you can't get life or missiles from enemies or blowing stuff up. the "concentrate" thing is OK i guess. I keep going back to the powerups though. One of the things that was so much fun about the prime games (or any other metroid game) was gaining the powerups as you went along... now it is just lame. It almost feels like they had this great idea of a game played out but then decided to water it down and speed it up 9/3/2010 11:03:43 PM |

So I just beat the game a few hours ago. I managed to track down all 100% of the items, but I think it's kind of stupid that you can't hunt them all down before the final boss fight. Speaking of which, the boss fight might as well have been a feature-length movie, considering how long all those damn cutscenes were.
***minor spoilers ahead***
The story and writing got a little bit better later on near the end. However, the entire "Deleter" subplot is never resolved. We never find out who he is, and it's never so much as brought up again. What the hell was the point, other than to make you suspect Adam? And as for his big noble sacrifice to save Samus that was alluded to in Fusion? He didn't save her from shit. He marches off on some suicide mission to eject one of the sections of the station, making up excuses for why Samus can't do it. His "sacrifice" happens completely off screen, while Samus stands around and cries about it like a helpless bimbo.
The fight with the metroid queen was hard as hell, but it didn't disappoint. The very last boss battle, however, was nothing more than another damn pixel hunt. I'm not opposed to gimmick boss battles, not every fight needs to require God-of-War-esque skills and reflexes to win. But given how difficult most of the boss fights were, the final fight was a big letdown. And unless you're just one of those people who is compelled to get 100% completion, there's really no incentive to finish tracking down all of the upgrades.
***end spoilers***
I might replay this one or more times just to see how fast I can get through it now, but honestly there isn't really any point. I might even see about trying to trade it in or get a refund. I haven't decided yet, however. 9/5/2010 1:01:02 AM |

Co-sign with umbrellaman 100%.
I wish the people who make cinema scenes for Japanese games would figure out what "subtlety" means. MGS4 (some of it), FFXIII (most of it) and this game (all of it) are just painful in that department.
**** spoilers****
I found the final boss pretty easy except for the power bomb thing. And the part with MB after that was just annoying.
This is the best explanation for the Deleter (lame name) thing:
Quote : | "There are 6 Soldiers. Lyle and Maurice were found dead before the deleter was introduced. So at this point there are 4 suspects. 2/6 Soldiers are dead.
Adam James KG Anthony
There's a scene that shows the deleter pushing one of the soldiers into the fire pit, we don't know who that is. However 3/6 soldiers are dead
During the Ridley fight Anthony "Dies" due to ridley pushing him off. So he's taken off the suspect list. 4/6 Soldiers are dead
James KG Adam
Now adam shoots samus because he wanted to stop samus. however he doesn't kill her, and the deleter wanted to kill everyone who knew about the truth, so if adam was the deleter, he would killed samus. So blah blah ventures off and sacrifices himself. 5/6 soldiers are dead
James KG
So we find James's dead body because he tried to kill MB (whom he presumed was madeline i believe) yet MB killed HIM which wasn't expected. at this point 6/6 soldiers are dead. KG has to have been thrown in the fire because you find jame'sbody
tl;dr James was it" |
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/960554-metroid-other-m/56195278
Basically the whole deleter thing is dropped once it becomes clear it isn't Adam. Pretty lame. It was nice at least to see the Galactic officer who was orchestrating everything.
**** end spoilers ***
I give the game a 7/10. People always complain about the story in Nintendo games, but this is a perfect example of why I don't really mind. Bad voice acting, horrible script, and nearly ruining an otherwise likable character. If they do this style of game again they should drop the story elements to the minimal amount we got in Prime 1-3 (or hire someone who knows how to fucking write), ditch the first-person shit, and map missiles to the minus button.9/5/2010 4:45:58 PM |

Finally got around to finishing this. Agreed with keeping the storyline down. It works better in Zelda games to have a big plot but Metroid is supposed to have a lot creepier and mysterious atmosphere. Up until this game, Samus was only known as a complete badass who barely showed emotion. This game portrays her as just an every day girl with daddy issues who spends too much time crying and not enough time kicking ass.
Although I will admit, the Ridley boss fight was pretty epic and I did enjoy the part where she had a flashback to her childhood (for those who are unfamiliar with the Metroid storyline, as a child Samus was living on a colony that was attacked by the space pirates... Ridley killed her parents right in front of her and was about to kill her before she was saved). It's the first time that Samus has been known to show fear and even though Ridley is well established as her nemesis it was kinda cool to see her initial reaction to him. 9/10/2010 3:45:39 AM |

I had some more thoughts that have occurred to me.
This game is basically a rip-off of Fusion, and the game makers didn't try very hard to cover that up. In both games you're on a space station whose purpose was to contain and study creatures for military applications, they're divided into different sections for different kinds of climates, they're both hand-holdingly linear, they both contain super-secret metroid research divisions, and both of them feature the gravity-controlling goo face monster as a boss. In fact, that boss looks exactly the same as it did in Fusion.
I think I'm going to make this the last time I post in this thread, because everything that has needed to be said about this game has finally been beaten to death. To sum up my feelings:
-this game had good action and fun combat, suffering only from an awkward control scheme
-this game is too damn linear. Why are all of the doors locked, except for the one that contains the next plot point? Why can't I explore on my own?
-the pixel hunts had potential, but were very poorly executed and therefore painfully irritating
-the ability authorization crap has to be one of the biggest videogame design faux pas in recent history. Not only did it require a huge suspension of disbelief (really, Samus? You're not even going to keep your suit's defenses and countermeasures switched on?), it destroyed the typical cycle of exploration/reward. You haven't earned your new-found abilities, you've had them all along; you just elected to not use them because Samus decides that it's more important be a good submissive housewife.
-the voice-acting was an inconsistent mix of decent and horrendous, specifically Samus's monologues. Much of Samus's feelings and relationships are informed instead of shown, which once again is not helped by sub-par performances. And of course there was a lot of gratuitous melodrama; powerful emotional scenes are perfectly fine, but this is Metroid, not All My Children. But I could forgive all of that. What I can't forgive is the horrible writing and the derailment of Samus's personality. I'm willing to bet that big part of the reason the voice acting sucked is because none of the actors could believe the lines they were suppose to be saying. 9/20/2010 4:13:42 PM |
