I just learned that my house next year does not allow pets of any kind so I'm going to have to let the boys go Chinchillas do not smell and are great pets for children. They are active at night, but are always ready to play during the day. They are extremely curious and do acrobatic jumps when you let them roam around. I've found them to be easy to maintain with no more work than your average rabbit.
Gizmo is a gray chinchilla who is approximately 3.5 years old. He is very friendly and loves to be scratched under his chin. Tails is a beautiful mosaic chinchilla that is almost 2 years old. The tip of his tail is white, hence the name. He can be very shy at first, but I can have the most fun with him because he is very energetic. They get along very well together, but Tails had a habit of flipping over their food dish when done, so I attached it to the board and now they are peas in a pod.
I bought Gizmo for $125 and Tails for $130. This ad also includes a giant glass water bottle, a two story cage that is in great condition, a blue igloo that is in great condition, and a attachable dustbath that is good condition.
If you add everything up you get: Gizmo- $125 Tails- $130 Cage- $70 Water Bottle: $15 Wheel: $13 Igloo: $7 3 months of Dustbath: $20 Dustbath: $20
For a total of: $400
BUT you can have it all for only $150. I will be able to keep them until August 1st, but I wanted to make this ad early to ensure they were going to a good home! If you have any questions about care, tips, or anything else, just ask. 6/11/2009 4:51:33 PM |

not always...
chinchillas have fragile bones and can be easily injured or traumatized by children. They can be okay for older children who understand boundaries and how to handle a chinchilla.
good luck finding them a home.6/15/2009 10:30:50 AM |

That's definitely good advice. Although I found them more rugged than people made them out to be. Gizmo fell behind a shelf about 7 feet and we had to pull him out by his tail. He got out and just went back to bouncing off walls like nothing had happened. 6/15/2009 2:35:03 PM |

Pulling a chinchilla by a tail isn't as bad as you make it seem It doesn't hurt them, but they don't like it. In fact, when you groom chins, you're supposed to hold them by the base of the tail.
This is the champion chinchilla breeder Ralph Shoots.. he's been a rancher for over 40 years.

Most pet owners don't, but if you're a breeder and you show your chins, yes :-) It really makes them look 100% better after they're groomed. 6/15/2009 4:23:00 PM |

My chinchilla that I got from a guy on here a couple months ago is great! Good for someone who wants a pet who's relatively low maintenance and fun/interesting. 7/22/2009 4:21:57 PM |

I had a friend who bought one, kept it in the dorm, returned to the un-air-conditioned dorm in the dead of summer - to find the Chin dead from heat exhaustion - only had the chin for 2 hours. They have to be pampered...

Okay I moved them back in with me at my parents place until the 10th. If you want to drive out to see them in person, you'll have to come to apex I don't mind bringing them to you, but it can't be until afternoon. 8/1/2009 12:16:33 AM |

Do they get along with dogs? My dog loves to play with other animals, though he does like whipping the shit out of the stuffed chickmunk by it's neck sometimes. Hmmm. 8/7/2009 1:30:13 PM |

I'm not sure. The cats at my parents house don't seem to pay them mind when they are in their cage. I'm pretty sure the dog would end up trying to chase and catch them though, and it wouldn't be good. 8/7/2009 2:22:39 PM |

Do not risk putting another species with a chinchilla. Some dogs can get along with chinchillas, but it's not worth the risk. I have heard so many horror stories about cats killing chins, dogs biting off tails, and even worse that I won't go into. Chins are skiddish animals who can go into shock with the least bit of stress, so please don't purchase or adopt a chinchilla if you plan to let it play with another animal. 8/11/2009 9:02:41 PM |

sorry, I was kidding I love Chins but I have a dog. And as much as I trust him he doesn't have enough experience with smaller fragile animals. I wouldn't put them together 8/12/2009 3:56:49 PM |

This seems like a relevant thread to ask this question... does anyone have any knowledge of a good exotics or chinchilla experienced vet in the area. We don't need one now, but if something ever comes up, we don't know where to go. Thought maybe someone would know. 8/13/2009 10:06:02 AM |

The "best" is Avian and Exotics in Raleigh. They're the most expensive also, and in my opinion, absolutely outrageous when it comes to their prices. As far as chinchilla vets go - chins don't need to go to a hospital unless it's a major emergency. No check ups needed, it causes too much stress. Most basic vets can deal with these situations, such as bloat, amputations, fungus, etc.
As far as chinchillas, hedgies and gliders go - you're more than welcome to e-mail me if you have any problems. I'm currently working on performing chin necropsies to understand their insides. From working with many ranchers, I've found solutions to major problems that are amazingly simple. Most ranchers and the majority of breeders don't vet their chinchillas anymore - they learn to treat the problems from home and we try to teach pet owners to stop taking their chins to the vet every time they lose a piece of fur.

Yeah, I'm hardly every going to take him to the vet unless its some kind of emergency issue. I'm not a particularly... worrisome owner. I just figured if something every came up, it would be nice to know where to take him. 8/14/2009 5:59:49 PM |
