What happens when you change the gears in a manual transmission when the engine is not running at the clutch is not depressed? I think one of my friends did that to my car.. 6/17/2009 11:11:56 PM |

While I've never figured out how, someone in my autoshop class managed to lock up a manual transmission by shifting without the clutch while the car was off. It wouldn't go into any gear with or without the clutch pedal being depressed if I remember correctly. Maybe a bent shift fork like Ragged mentioned. 6/18/2009 12:00:27 AM |

I've shifted many times in my n00b days of driving while the engine was running AND the clutch was not depressed. It makes a nasty grinding noise. 6/18/2009 10:03:37 AM |

It goes into gear.
What's the point of opting for a manual if you haven't got a clue how it works? A number of the practical off-shoots of driving a manual rely on some awareness of its operating principles. Not realizing that you can shift the transmission when it's off or without the clutch leaves inaccessible several basic graceful failure modes a manual offers over an automatic such as push starting to avoid being stranded with a dead battery or starter, starting in first and performing rev-matched shifts to get around with bum clutch hydraulics, and so on.6/18/2009 4:16:06 PM |

when I was about 10 years old I locked the transmission up on my grandpa's tactor by shifting it without the engine running
but that was mostly due to the design of shift mechanism 6/19/2009 3:16:09 PM |
