so i got an hdmi cable today to replace my compnent cables for my hd dvr

i hooked everything up and noticed that when i leave the cable box on but turn off the tv or switch the tv to another input, the cable box tuner turns off. the box itself remains on and saves what channel i am on, but it stops recording the live tv.

is this something to do with the hdmi handshake? is there any way to stop this? i ended up switching back to components b/c alot of times i like to pause a show while i play ps3 or something and i cant figure out how to do this with hdmi.

I have a pansonic viera tv, a scientific atlanta 8300 hd box and brighthouse cable in florida

your TV may have a function that "syncs" with your inputs when you are using HDMI..

i know sony bravias have an option called "bravia sync" where things will turn off when you switch inputs or turn off the TV. it can be turned off through the options or settings screen..

panasonic viera may have something similar

if you have something scheduled to record later (DVR), will it still record that show later?
what you are saying is that it just cancels what you had paused on, right?

yeah i think you're right on the handshaking part- as far as i know, and unless bdub's notion on the tv part having a function is legit, there's no way to solve it from the dvr's end that i know of. that's just the nature of hdmi. maybe a creston setup would give you different results but don't quote me on that (plus that involves $$$).

it's bullshit. i'll roll up to the tv and turn it on, see the dvr spinnin and be like "oh i see you were buffering some espn for me. let's see here...wait. wtf is this? you didn't buffer anything? what have you been doing this whole time?"

and it's all foppish and fat faces me like it broke wind

Im having the same issue with my samsung and twc. might have to switch back to component, I dont think there will be much if any noticeable picture quality loss.

sorry, semi-forgot about my own thread!

^i didnt test it, but i would assume it would record stuff b/c the dvr records shows you tell it to even when it is off. what it is doing is turning off the tuners since you arent specifically using them. it is basically acting like the box was turned off except that the power indicator doesnt go off and it doesnt lose the channel you are on (my dvr turns on to a fav channel, but in this case it stays on the channel you were last on)

i think my tv does have something similar to what you describe, but it is off. plus, like i said, it isnt fully turning the dvr box off.

i already returned the hdmi cable. it just sucks b/c my tv only has two component channels which are currently being used by my dvr and ps2, but i got my mom's old dvd player which i would prefer to have hooked up to components as well. instead i have been defaulting back to using my ps2 to play dvds, but w/out hte remote control it can be annoying. the coax hookup for hte dvd player just has too much quality dropoff for a big screen plasma.
