Group A Canada Costa Rica El Salvador Jamaica
Group B Grenada Haiti Honduras United States
Group C Guadeloupe Mexico Nicaragua Panama
USA has won this event 3 out of the last 4 times. Despite sending our "C" squad, it's a good shot to see some of our World Cup backups get some playing time. We should easily get out of group play, but no promises after that. Maybe a little redemption from the Confederations Cup might make everyone feel a tiny bit better.
Group Stage Matches: 7/3 @ 8pm: Canada v. Jamaica 7/3 @ 10pm: Costa Rica v. El Salvador 7/4 @ 7pm: Honduras v. Haiti 7/4 @ 9pm: Grenada v. United States 7/5 @ 5pm: Panama v. We are in a boring ass group, but it should be a nice tune up before we play Mexico again in August. Looks like only 4 people from the Confeds cup team will be back for the Gold Cup.

JOHANNESBURG, June 29 (Reuters) - United States switch attention from the Confederations Cup, where they finished runners-up to Brazil on Sunday, to defending the CONCACAF Gold Cup this weekend.
Exhausted yet exhilarated by their exertions in South Africa, where they fought back in style to earn a place in the final after losing their first two games, the Americans leave for home on Monday to seek another trophy.
However, coach Bob Bradley has chosen just four players from his 23-man Confederations squad to play in the Gold Cup. The team kickoff against Grenada in Seattle on Saturday.
“It’s been a great experience here, we’ll turn the page quickly and get to work with the group. The Gold Cup is still very important to us,” Bradley told Reuters before leaving for a 25-hour flight and a change of 10 time zones.
“We knew it was going to be a challenging summer. We go to the Gold Cup with a new squad but it’s a great opportunity for some of the new players.
“It’s different to the Confederations Cup but it’s still the championship of our confederation. We take it very seriously, it’s played in the U.S. and we want to do well,” added Bradley.
The Americans, who also face Honduras and Haiti in their opening-round group, have won the last two Gold Cups in 2005 and 2007 and it was as champions of the CONCACAF region that they competed in the Confederations Cup." |

But seriously, I think we'll make it out of group play with our B/C squad. not too much competition there. Honduras is the only team I'd see making a legit run at us. 6/30/2009 10:39:49 PM |

ahh...i would really love to see this tournament merge with Copa America, and be held every 4 years in between World Cups.
anyone know if this is a likely scenario, or am i just whistling Dixie out of my ass? 7/1/2009 3:24:38 AM |

the smaller CONCACAF nations have such a small chance of advancing as it is, it wouldn't benefit them to be thrown into first round matches will smaller CONMEBOL teams that are generally superior 7/1/2009 5:05:47 AM |

here is the roster for the gold cup. and we are allowed to call up 7 more players for a 30 man team due to consecutive tournaments.
18 are only allowed on game days though
Current Roster:
GOALKEEPERS: Jon Busch (Chicago Fire), Troy Perkins (IK Start), Luis Robles (FC Kaiserslautern)
DEFENDERS: Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Jay Heaps (New England Revolution), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Michael Parkhurst (FC Nordsjaellands), Heath Pearce (Hansa Rostock)
MIDFIELDERS: Davy Arnaud (Kansas City Wizards), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Colin Clark (Colorado Rapids), Sam Cronin (Toronto FC), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo), Logan Pause (Chicago Fire), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew)
FORWARDS: Freddy Adu (AS Monaco), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas), Charlie Davies (Hammarby IF), Santino Quaranta (D.C. United)
im not too confident about central defense or the entire midfield
lol, i remember saving a logan pause shot that helped my team advance to the state cup semifinals in 1999 i think.

Heck yea! I hope he gets the nod for the starts and earns a few more caps (and a few more clean sheets as well!). I think I mentioned this in one other thread, but for a span of probably 5 years I watched nearly every single home soccer game UNC-Charlotte played and traveled to a lot of away ones with my dad.
Jon played a couple seasons there before going pro and his first season there I was a ball boy ( I was like 9 when the season started) and always requested to be behind his goal because he would talk to me some during the game and stayed after a few times to practice some goalkeeper stuff (since I had just gotten into goalkeeping). In fact I think I still have a pair of gloves and a jersey he gave me after a home playoff win they had the year they went to the final four.
I always liked him because 1) he was darn good and had a ridiculous punt (I saw him get 2-3 assists straight off his punt in college haha) 2) He is fairly short for a goalkeeper at the level he plays (his bio says 5'10 but his college one said 5'8 one year and 5'9 another on the rosters I have compared to keller, friedel, and howard who are 6'3, 6'4, 6'2) and I was always a short keeper heh

We are doing ok for the situation we are in right now, but Davis still needs to learn to give the ball up on fast breaks. He tried to take on 3 guys alone and got burned. If he had stopped dribbling he could have passed to someone on the left, or right who was wide open. Either way, he still seems to be one of our best options at forward right now. 7/4/2009 10:01:15 PM |

not sure how much you could possibly take from this game...
but, beckerman looked well with the ball in the midfield. rogers looked good on the wing. davies was continuously attacking. not much the defense had to do and gk made 1 save(a random good one) i think so cant really put much critique there.
adu showed good and bad. he seems to lack a real killer instinct the closer he gets to goal. that breakaway shouldve been him, not sure why he passed it to davies. overall, its just too hard to pick anyone apart or praise too much in this kind of game where we dominate about 80% of it. had we barely won or lost then i may have bought a ticket to DC or NY or wherever they are playing next and personally took a shit on the first person off the plane or bus... 7/5/2009 1:16:45 AM |

i thought adu looked good, his touch was a little lacking sometimes, but thats probably because he hasn't played in a full match in about a year. his chip would've been so perfect if it went in, it was only inches away.
i liked the way beckerman and rodgers played a lot though, it was against grenada, but they were really working hard on and off the ball. 7/5/2009 11:53:30 AM |

I actually like the commentary from the guy on FSC. I don't know his name but it's not the color guy. That guy is just annoying because he just yells. But the other guy calls the game like it is. He's obviously a fan of the US team, but if they're playing like ass he has no problem calling them out on it. I just feel like he's on point with everything he says. He is a little bland though. 7/8/2009 6:44:04 PM |
