How often do you have to work overtime?

i do, sort of...i'm salary, but i get comp time at 1.5x

sometimes i work overtime when i want more vacation days...aside from that, i very rarely HAVE to work overtime

Salary, so no. Although i do put in about 45 hours a week, sometimes 50 depending on the load.

salary + overtime pay, if i work at least 5 hours over 40. and i hit the 45+ hour mark twice a month.

i'm salaried, but we get comp time instead of overtime. it must be pre-approved by our boss.

we get comp time first that we can be paid for or be used for additional vacation days.
at the end of the year whatever comp time we didn't use, we get paid out for.
holidays and weekends = time & a half comp time.

only time we really need to work comp/overtime is in trial prep for large cases, and there's only one maybe two big trials a year that will actually constitute the need for comp/overtime.

Nope and I only occasionally work significant overtime. I usually work an hour or so over 40 hours a week.

I have never gotten overtime since I have graduated college. And it has been a rare occasion that I don't work at least 50 hours a week.

I would imagine that overtime is something that is getting rarer. In retail and food service, overtime is discouraged as it heavily affects the bottom line (and management bonuses) and salaried employees definitely paid no overtime. I guess there's overtime in manufacturing and construction, but most definitely government jobs.

I get paid straight time for hours worked over 40.

I work over 40 a lot during the summer and every other week or so other than that.

Salary with no overtime, even though I usually work 60-70 hours a week.

However, my company is very flexible with time and has no problem if I take time off. They do compensate very well.

I'm salary too. overtime never starts unless I'm working 45+ hours. then it's 1.5 to 2 I think.

even that is up to the manager's discretion

i'm a grad student. after all the hours i work on an average week, i make roughly $3 an hour.

Salaried. No overtime. But I am usually able to double up on my billing hours so I rarely ACTUALLY put in over 40. Usually we're billing for at least 50 for me though.

sort of.

I'm salaried, so if i go over 40 hours i don't get extra, but I get paid an extra flat fee for working 6 hours on a weekend day or holiday.

Ok, so almost everyone has a cell phone, and I would imagine many people give that number to their employer. So, the thought popped into my head that more and more employees will kind of be treated like they're "on call". I mean, your office calls to ask you for something after you've left the office for the day, and then you pick up, you're working right?

Rarely work ot, I'm not compensated, but my boss let's us take comp time under the table. It may not be 1:1, but its nice when he doesn't have you enter a day off, or let's you bounce early. It works.

As for being on call... Rarely will anyone in our group need to cover an emergency situation, or even anything urgent that requires an answer immediately.

Sometimes we have to do projects at odd hours to work around production...before I was there a guy had a late night Activity scheduled, fell ill, so they called around. But it was Friday night and most people had a drink. That's the get out of jail free card, if work tries to call you in and you're not supposed to be on call.

Salaried, don't get paid any overtime.

I would say I average between 40-50 hours/week

i don't know if i've ever worked a single hour of overtime.

i had a job with an owner who paid in cash under the table (Putt-Putt), then I worked at a job (golf course) where they would work you 7 days/week, minus every other weekend off--but when you didn't have the weekend off, they'd work you a few hours less on many days to avoid ever busting 40/week. I had another job (engineering intern) that was pretty routine banker's hours, and then after that, I worked part time at an auto parts store for several years later in college, but that was usually 15-30 hours/week, so I never busted 40.

I've worked 20 hour weeks and I've worked 100 hour weeks in the USMC over nearly the last 10 years, but that's salary, so there's no OT.

salaried, but have production requirements per 80 hr biweek...we can do overtime, but I usually just make my production and not worry about it and chill the rest of the available time

some people do extra work in the same (or less) amount of time per biweek and still claim the overtime even if they dont 'work' the full 80+overtime amount



ive never actually claimed overtime myself, because ive been on promotion schedules which require about a 13 biweek average at 95% of the next GS level's prod. req....and I should get my next promotion in June, so I can start hotelling/teleworking from Raleigh fulltime by October woop woop

Same here. They can't pay us overtime, and if you have to work an hour or two late here and there, that's expected. I probably average 45 or so hrs/week. But if we have to come in on a weekend, stay super late, stay late every night for long stretches, etc. he'll let us have extra "informal" vacation.

So the phone thing really fits into that. If there is a call, and you're not busy, the expectation is that you'll answer and help out. But it's rare because a)usually they'll only call if really needed because b)there is an "on call" rotation where we have to be 24x7 available for 1 week out of every 10 weeks. So that person takes all the initial calls and usually you'll only get pinged in special situations that particularly pertain to your work or where the on-call person is not familiar with the subject/situation.

It depends. Are the 4 hour drives between my breakfast meetings and lunch meetings considered "work time?" If so, I work 80 hour weeks. If not, I work 20 hour weeks

Maybe.

Our overtime doesn't start until after 45 hours worked. And even that is up to a managers discretion, which usually doesn't happen. Its 1:1.

The after hours phone calls are rare, but they do happen. And I can feel the atmosphere generally trending this way, towards an standby feeling even when out of the office.

no OT pay. i work >40 hrs every week, usually 45-50. 70-80+ during outages. i think there is some provision for comp time or something like that, but that don't happen for me.

my boss thinks there is a direct correlation between time on-site and productivity. he doesn't realize that i can get more done in 40 hrs than many of my peers will do in 60. oh well, they change the mgmt around here like they change their socks.

yep, i'm on call all the time. even says so in my job description.

You know....depending on the type of work, some might argue that after 60 hours or so, you're just kind of burned out and aren't being that productive anymore.

related: i don't understand the trend of people bragging about how many hours they work like its some kind of badge of honor. you should try to work as few hours as possible and instead judge your success by your accomplishments. 40 hours is already plenty, no need to work 45 or 50 hour weeks consistently.

never been paid overtime - however bonuses and options are in the equation

i have wondered what it'd be like to have a 9-5 type job - since college i've done a consulting gig for a large company and worked at a startup that was recently acquired - both have no real set schedule and now i manage a global team that ensures Internet-facing servers and DBs are up and running at peak performance and i take a weekend / after-i-leave-the-office call at least twice per week and that's only after either my leads can't handle it (or have but need to tell me the shitstorm i'm walking in to in the morning) or the call comes from my boss

i give my guys comp time if i think they've worked above and beyond what is expected but that doesn't come until well over 40 hours - my boss doesn't count my vacation days for the most part because he knows i'm there when it counts

i think i average 50-60 hours each week but largely because i love what i do and i'm a bit of a workaholic - i could turn it off more if needed and have recently due to a newborn

You know.... Some might argue that if you're consistently working 50 to 60 hours a week, you are being abused as an employee. And your management needs to nut up and hire more people.
