There are enough of you that have experience with this engine to ask this here:

Ive got the rest of the car built for 1/8 mile drag and have run out of budget for now. I want to get the biggest bang for the buck with mods for the engine to begin with, w/o tearing it down. (want to be able to run it the rest of the summer) This winter I will tear it down, rebuild and upgradge with H/C/I.

This is a speed density car btw.

First step would be some 4.11-4.56 gears and a good locker. 5 speed or auto? If it is an auto, do a C4 conversion. A good converter and gears will pick up more than any nickle and dime bolt on stuff.

One step ahead of ya there. Completed thus far (or about to be) =
-spool
-4.30 gears
-upper and lower rear control arms
-drag springs, generic shocks
- MT ET street drags

And its a T5 tranny, recently rebuilt with what I expect is a nearly stock clutch (prob wont last long).

i thought you wanted this car to be a bracket racer? Why would you use a manual transmission for that?

i might eventually change it to an automatic depending on how much I end up getting into it. the stock automatic tranny wouldnt have been sufficient anyway.

I dont think a 130K 5.0 with H/C/I would be good either, for a serious bracket car.

^will be rebuilt this winter.

As far as the base engine, all just depends on how fast you want to go. Decently built 5.0 that sticks with the right gearing can be very quick.

For a bracket car an auto trans is a must. 5 speed with 4.30s would have to be a good time though.

on the plus side the civic was cheaper, wrong wheel drive, and 1.6L.

It's been a long long time since I've been at the track, but don't stock LS1s on sticky tires run in the high 9s?

So, how much money are you going to spend to get your ride into the same range as a stock LS1?

what i have into it now will prob get it close. figure a lil less that $5000 including vehicle cost, and thats without any engine mods (so lots of room to grow). i considered an fbody originally, they are just a pita to work on by comparison.

which is why its good that ryncsu is starting with a mustang.

i can lose traction in the middle of 3rd gear >60mph with azenis on the highway and i dont make dick for power.

got it to the track tonight. was disappointed with the first couple runs, 9.6's at 72 or so. But.. last two runs were 9.3 and 9.4 at 75 so thats better. Best run was a 2.0 60 ft. Can probably get another 1/10 or two out of it as I get used to it. Considering before gears and tires it was running 10.1 - 10.5.

For comparisons sake I played around with an r/t challenger a couple times who managed about a 9.3 - 9.5. Best I managed in my G8GT stock at this particular track was 9.5.

Sooo... im happy for now but let the fun continue Headers and the removal of the remaining bits of the emissions system coming in the next couple weeks.

improvements yes, but my old modded non turbo Rx-7 ran a 9.7 @ 71 in the 1/8th and those cars are really slow by today's standards
