I blew a line on my airride last night. When I went to take the fitting off to replace the line, it sheared, with the threads still in the strut body.
SO
Can some one bring me an easy out/ thread extractor that fits 1/4 NPT or take me to go buy one?
Thanks. 7/10/2009 3:22:17 PM |

I'm at U-Woods, off of Trailwood. About 1/4mile from intersection of Gorman and Tryon.
I'll take whoever can get here first, as I want it to be done before it gets dark. 7/10/2009 3:49:46 PM |

So, the bolt extractor BROKE OFF in the damn hole. 7/10/2009 6:39:04 PM |

Here is the wonderfull pictoral story:
So, there was a hole that was rubbed into the line:
When the line blew, I was in the middle of the road, thankfully there were parking spots direclty in front of me. I very, very slowly rolled there to park. On the way, I polished some of the inner wheel well. I also ended up bending the fender out, which pulled it away from the door and bumper.
I bought the straight compression fittings to fix the hole, but decided to do better, and replace the line with a more permanent fix. They are 3/8 DOT air line from semi air brakes made at a store called Parkers.
I grab a few tools and get ready to work:
I figure that I will be putting new line in, so I cut the old line out so I could get the wrench in there better:
Then I go to take out the fitting, and it breaks off:
Well, crap. I run to the store and buy a bolt extractor set. It is one of the few tools I don't already have. Then, it BREAKS OFF in the hole. This was my setup:
Now, I'm left with this:
Well, crap. If I hadn't cut the line in the first place, and just put in the compression fitting it would have been a non-issue. If the fitting to the bag had just come out, it would not have been a problem. If the bolt extractor hadn't broke, it would have been awesome. 7/10/2009 7:33:00 PM |

at this point, I'm going to have to pull the strut and drill it out I think. I just don't know if I can drill out that bolt extractor. 7/10/2009 8:11:46 PM |

the extractor broke off 3/8'' or so below the surface. I don't have any dremel bits that will go that low, without cutting into the strut spring seat.
It looks like I need to pull the strut, dissasemble it, have the center drilled out, have it tapped to keep the threads, and the reassemble the entire strut. 7/10/2009 11:13:38 PM |

I think you might be able to drill the extractor. I have before. It's a pain but can be done. Sorry that thing broke!! 7/10/2009 11:24:50 PM |

I think I might dissassemble it and take it to T-Hoff, or see if gk2004's machine shop has the ability to fix it. I don't have the tap to fix the threads, and no way to clamp the strut for my drill press. I really don't want to screw it up by doing it with a hand drill. 7/10/2009 11:46:17 PM |

What a bitch. I'd normally say bust out the torch, but I don't know if it's safe to heat that shock.
Once you get a new extractor to grab, a little heat around the outside and a cool shot of compressed air can(upside down) directly into the center couldn't hurt. 7/10/2009 11:48:27 PM |

The shock is a chopped and revalved Bilstien. A torch would be fine on it, it would just fuck the paint most likely. And, I definately couldn't do it with the bag still on.

they can be drilled with a good bit. just takes a while. could try mig'ing a bolt in there too, i had sucess doing that with a frozen head bolt that i'd stripped/broken an extractor off in. 7/11/2009 11:55:04 AM |

you can either weld a nut to it and back it out, or smack it with a punch and bust it into pieces 7/11/2009 2:35:51 PM |

You gonna use some anti-sieze or softset on the new fitting(s)? Shot in the dark, can you angle a small punch to reverse the broken extractor back out? 7/12/2009 3:29:27 PM |
MaximaDrvr

NO, anti-sieze would be a bad thing. The installer used a liquid thread sealer instead of teflon tape. It is the proper way to install the lines, which don't usually have a need to be undone. It is still unusual for what happened to me to actually happen. I will be using teflon tape myself. I'm questioning whether I should put the new line in the passenger side.
Well, finally something went right. I took the front strut out in all of 20 minutes.
I then had it in pieces in the next 20 minutes.
Here is the problem:
I'm a little concerned about the part needing to be fixed is an integral part of the bag. 7/12/2009 4:37:37 PM |

Well, gk2004 is awesome. He picked up the bag, fixed it, and had it back to me in less than 2 hours. The strut assembly is back together with my new line in it, and will be back in the car tomorrow.

Thanks man, I was a pretty easy fix only because I have done it several thousand times before today and still have good equipment and tools at the house. Holla if the other side gives you any problems. 7/12/2009 8:34:25 PM |

I got it all back together again. No leaks, no new rubbing. The lines are directly against the sheet metal and appear to not rub anything. I will check them in a few days.

lol. After seeing Jeepman abuse the hell out of a Craftsman (I think) extractor I decided that that's one tool you don't want to go cheap on. I also have a set from AA, but I've only used it once on a nylon drain plug that broke. I'd definitely search out a better tool for anything important.
