Hey all
So my girlfriends year old XPS M1330 is out of warranty and of course just died.
I have read a lot online saying the thing overheats itself and can kill the motherboard or the display.
I have no problem buying replacement parts and instlaling them myself, but I don't know of a good way to diagnos which part(s) I would need.
I want to avoid giving DELL any more money so I am looking for suggestions on where to take it to get the problem diagnosed. If the price is right there I wouldnt mind paying them to repair it but it would have to be cheaper than the online price for just parts because I have no problem opening it and swapping out any problems.
So in short, what do you guys recommend for laptop diagnosis / repair?
And if anyone has had this model before ill explain what is happening. The lights across the top do their normal flash when turned on but then go out. The hard drive will still be on and the fan at the back will be going but it makes no effor to boot. Ive tried it both without the HDD and without the batter (just wall power) and the behavior is consistent.
I think it fried itself but dont want to buy a new screen AND mobo if i dont have to.

Get a new one. Laptops suck to fix. Pull HD, get data off it since it still sounds good.
I dunno about heat killing a display (graphics chip maybe...) but mobo being dead yes. New mobo in a laptop aint worth it, just replace it.7/23/2009 12:27:34 PM |

This computer also has a shitty video card....that is known to fail. Its not worth the $ and the headache. 7/23/2009 12:52:18 PM |

Agree with others. Not worth it unless the mobo is practically free. 7/23/2009 2:15:35 PM |

Yeah this is what I was thinking, I just didnt want to face it.
Well you can be sure I am not buying another DELL, so what would you all suggest for the best laptop for your buck?
Its for my gf, so no gaming. Itunes, internet, and uploading pictures are what it will be doing.

Oh and there's a pink one that looks cute, if your gf is into that sort of thing.

Extremely helpful. You would think they would notify owners of those PCs
