I'm potentially meeting someone out this weekend for a first date and we just want to grab a few drinks somewhere chill. She lives in Carrboro, so I figured we could meet up out her way. Not really thinking anything too nice...or too cliche (def not Top of the Hill).

Where are the cool hippy'ish hangouts?

Armadillo Grill isn't terrible. And it has the added bonus of easy parking. It's a chain restaurant, but you can still drink, grab a bite, and be walking distance from Carr Mill Mall which is very much a hippie hang out if you wanted to walk around, or grab a dessert from Maple View Ice Cream & sit on their rocking chairs on the front porch area. I've never been, but the DSI Comedy Theater is right there in Carr Mill Mall too.

A lot of my coworkers (I work in Carrboro) are pretty big fans of Tylers if all you're looking for is a drink
http://www.tylerstaproom.com/restaurants/carrboro

I wish I could be of more help, I spend most of my waking hours in Carrboro so I should know more, but then again I don't drink which narrows down my experience of cool places to drink.

Check out Milltown in Carrboro...it's chill if a bit crowded at times, has a big beer list, and an outdoor seating area.

Carolina Brewery. Not that expensive, food is great, and they brew beer. My favorite place to go in Chapel Hill/Carrboro.

If you want to stick to Carrboro, go with Tylers and maybe The Station (attached to Southern Rail).

is 23 Steps still there? I remember when NCSU played UNC in CH one football season and we drank there before the game. I don't remember it being all that good, I just remember the fun of rolling up in there in NCSU jerseys.

There are plenty of options...my gf lived in carrboro for a long time so I've been to a lot of the places in the area.

The Lantern on Franklin Street has a really cool bar, and some interesting drinks. If you're planning on eating though you might want to go elsewhere because the food, while good, is $$.

Milltown is a great suggestion--in Carrboro, great beer selection with specializing in Belgian brews, good food. Southern Rail/The Station, just down the street from Milltown next to Carr Mill Mall/Weaver Street is also pretty cool.

Tyler's is ok, and also has a good beer list, but I prefer Milltown and SR.

When did they go non-smoking? The one time I went there (December of last year IIRC) seemed like a cool place, but I left smelling like an ashtray after being there for maybe an hour.

fine for a quick bite, but I wouldn't go there for drinks, especially not on a first date...

If you're venturing onto Franklin Street, besides The Lantern, Carolina Brewery could work. I also really like West End Wine Bar--neat place with a great rooftop patio. Not all that "hippy'ish" though. (Though neither is the Lantern really)

Holy shit, that space has been empty for like 7 years.

Mill Town is the best idea so far, though I wonder if West End Wine Bar is still there.

Yeats closed?

They used to serve kids who looked 16 there all the time so I guess they got caught.

Haven't been in a couple of months, but unless it shut down all of a sudden, it's alive and well.

^That's definitely an option. If it's good enough for JohnnyTHM, it's good enough for my date.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I kinda left it up to her to decide. Told her we'd go to Raleigh next time and I'd choose.

Linda's

right on franklin st, very chill/laid back atmosphere (unless there's a UNC basketball/football game on) and unbelievably good chicken fingers

This place is awful. Just meet them on Franklin street and walk until you find what you like.

Make her drive to the place closest to your house. She has to prove she is interested before you waste money on some dinner and drinks.

I have often heard the spotted dog referred to as spotted dog shit. Not a place you want to go to, especially not on a first date.
