A return to form for Gilliam? He is my favorite director, so I've been excited about this for a long time. The Gilliam Curse was in full effect again when Ledger died, but it looks like that may have led to an even more interesting film with Depp, Law, and Farrell.
Trailer is finally out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXv9Kgb59xM
No US distributor yet (what a surprise), but supposedly it will be out before Christmas.
Quote : | "In the present day, immortal 1,000-year-old Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) leads a traveling theatre troupe—including a sleight of hand expert, Anton (Andrew Garfield), and a dwarf, Percy (Verne Troyer)—that offers audience members a chance to go beyond reality through a magical mirror in his possession. Parnassus had been able to guide the imagination of others through a deal with the Devil (Tom Waits), who now comes to collect on the arrangement, targeting the doctor's daughter (Lily Cole). The troupe, which is joined by a mysterious outsider named Tony (portrayed by Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell), embark through parallel worlds to rescue the girl." |

^ I didn't think so. Are you talking about the newer (2005) version? I saw the 1920 German film and it was kinda spooky. 8/18/2009 11:23:19 AM |

Wonderful interview with Terry Gilliam about this movie (and et cetera).
Just absolutely fantastic to read a smart, passioate fan interview someone for an internet site and, while definitely brownnosing it ... still pulling off avery readable, exciting interview.

Weird I thought this movie deserved a larger audience. Do you know the reason why it is only at Galaxy or do they plan a wider release later? 12/24/2009 11:59:44 PM |

I think Jan 8th is the wider release...just not as many more screens. Maybe they'll expand from there.
I'll be there on the 8th though...for sure. 12/25/2009 1:02:59 AM |

^^ I can think of at least four: Dinklage, Troyer, Warwick Davis, and the guy who was on Seinfeld. Also, all the preliminary reviews suggest that Troyer did an excellent job. 12/25/2009 7:26:26 PM |

i liked it. the changing of actors was surprisingly not very forced and fit in with the movie.
there were a couple parts that seemed very monty python in tone and execution.
lily cole is really hot in the movie.

the story was a little all over the place, but it looked really good and the performances (esp. ledger and tom waits) were really good. 1/10/2010 2:06:52 PM |

I enjoyed it as well. The story flowed and I followed it fine up until the very end. And I agree, the change in actors to finish Heath's part went very smooth and didn't feel forced. Surprisingly, I thought Colin Farrell did the best job in Heath's shoes. It was a eye popping, stimulating movie, and just a bit funny.
And yes, Lily Cole was very hot. 1/10/2010 2:14:29 PM |

Just saw it, and I pretty much agree with everything that's been said. It's all over the place, but not too crazy. Waits is good, Farrell is the best of the mirror Ledgers, and Lily Cole is super hot.
The freakiest part for me was the cellphone rings post-credits. I had no idea what was going on. 1/18/2010 6:53:16 PM |

Saw it yesterday. As I said in the original post, I am a huge Gilliam fan, so I certainly have a bit of a bias. I enjoyed the film, and the more I think about it the more I liked it. It was a far cry from Gilliam's potential, though. There wasn't as much humor as there could have and I believe should have been, and quite frankly I didn't really care about any of the characters. I felt pretty emotionally detached throughout the entire thing (except perhaps in the last 15 minutes or so), but none the less it was very thought provoking and imaginative. 1/22/2010 4:03:37 PM |

I like it. Gilliam definitely reigned himself in on this one. It seems like he let loose, but it didn't feel as weird or unusual as some of his past stuff. My only problem was that the ending felt a little wonky, and took me a few hours to sort out mentally. But that's really more my problem than the movie's problem.
I'd go see it again, in theaters. And Troyer did fine, this is actually the first time I've enjoyed seeing him in a movie. 1/24/2010 9:13:16 PM |
