Central VA, specifically, Lynchburg area.
Me and a couple buddies (I'm in Raleigh, they're in Baltimore and Charleston WV) are looking to set up a camping trip over labor day weekend. Since we're so spread apart geographically, central VA/Lynchburg general area seems like the most balanced place to meet up.
Anyone know some good camping locations in the central VA region? or rafting/canoing for that matter. wouldn't mind a little hike in to the campsite but not doing a full on backpack trip. beer is too heavy for backpacking Let me know what you got, tww. 8/24/2009 5:21:38 PM |

yeah, i'd recommend going northwest from lynchburg... if you need a homebase, charlottesville and lexington are much nicer to meet people at than lynchburg ... pretty much the i-81 corridor

Yep, Shenandoah...Only been there a few times, but it's one of my favorite places to camp. Seems like I see alot of wildlife there. Last time we got 'trapped' for over an hour while hiking back to camp when two bear cubs decided to play right on the trail. Never saw the sow, but we could hear her off the trail. 8/25/2009 9:40:41 AM |

Shenandoah is good, so is the Sherando lake area around Waynesboro.
If you're looking at rafting, you really need to head back up to WV. The Shenandoah is generally too lazy for good rafting.
Grayson Highlands has some gorgeous spots, but is further south and west of Lynchburg. If you're willing to take one for the team, Harpers Ferry is a good spot too, though I don't know of any quick walk-in campsites off the top of my head. There are plenty of places there which will rent you tubes. 8/25/2009 11:04:00 AM |
