As long as they write competent sentences and phrases when it matters, (which they will have to do eventually in the college career) it shouldn't be worth worry.

A guy at work was home schooled and is now at Wake Tech (for financial reasons). He seems like a pretty smart guy, but cannot spell worth SHIT.

If you knew how many times I've had to proofread they're their there on technical documents, you'd shit yourself and not clean up.

Probably the same reason people use the terms, "ya'll, aint cha, forgettin, gest kiddin"....part of the environment they grew up with. Some of it has to do with folks being raised in the south and the last is that more then a few probably slept through English/literature class when they should of been learning how to spell and conjugate verbs.
