So... Where could I go about finding a BP-ZE crate engine (shortblock preferred)? Any places anyone can recommend? I've contacted Japan Direct but haven't received a response yet.

I know this engine was found in the following cars:
'91-'96 Ford Escort GT
'90-'94 Mazda Protege LX

I think it's time to cut your losses and get rid of the MX-3.

Why do you assume it's for the mx3 huh buddy? HUH?!

yeah, it would be Well, I figure it's about a grand for a complete rebuild. It doesn't need it right now. Compression has been fine and everything runs normal. It just started showing signs of wear, which I guess is to be expected from a 160k miles on a 17 year old mazda engine. I really want to get my hands dirty and open me up an engine and tinker with it. Bonus points for me because:
1) I already have a car, so I don't have to pay for a junker
2) I know this car's history, what's been done to it, etc
3) Pretty simple engine. Parts are available and inexpensive
4) I wouldn't get shit if I sold it.
5) For the money I'd put in to rebuild a lowly 1.6L 88hp 4 cylinder, I can probably find a BP shortblock, maybe spend a little more and freshen it up, and have a 1.8L 130hp 4 cylinder.
6) Swapping is a direct fit with the only required modification of adding 2 more wires to the stock wiring harness. It's not going to be anywhere as complicated as a v8 swap in a Porsche...

Besides, I like what Quinn has done with his turbo'd civic, and I've contemplated inviting him over for a boost party

how much would it cost to boost my engine? I don't think I need any internal work, since I've got a 9.7:1 compression ratio

Mazdaspeed motorsports? I'm looking to spend no more than $1000 on either a fully rebuilt shortblock or $300 for a used shortblock. I just haven't found any BP motors in the local salvage yards

I'd imagine Mazdaspeed being expensive, but I'll give them a shot...

so the bp block was in the miata and the 323gtx. the 323gtx was factory boosted with forged internals.

Per Japan Direct:

"Thank you very much for your inquiry, but we are sorry that we cannot help you with this request, as we do not have access to this engine or swap.

Good luck with your search and let us know if we can help with another request in the future.

FUUUUUUUCK. I guess it's salvage yard hopping time

However, there is irony; he has the same last name as me

Wait what? How is this a "waste"? I want to use this semi-unfortunate opportunity to actually learn and get hands on experience working on car engines. This turn around would cost no more than $2k. I'm not rich by any means, but I can afford $2k on a worthwhile experience. Plenty of people take a week vacation in NYC spending $2k (or more) in shopping and living expenses and say, "Hey, that was awesome." I guess anytime anyone spends money on something they want it's a waste...

abbradsh

Thanks... I've found quite a few Sephia's... Now that I know I can source an engine easily, I'll have to plan out how I'm going to make this all work.

Found a rebuilt BP-T for $1,700.... That's $10/hp. And since it's already setup for boost, more power is easy and around the corner. But I want it for CHEAPER

please do me a favor and start of with a better platform. just bc u've had the car for a long time and have all the records and have emotional attachment doesnt mean shit. go fast, go cheap get a turbo'd civic hatch with a built b18 and call it a day, if importing it out is ur thing.

I honestly would buy another 800 dollar dd beater car, drive.. then throw all the money u would at a shitty mazda turbo at the porscheve instead and make it an even bigger monster.

that porscheve is not done yet bro. dont mark that off as a finished project, it's sweet but it still needs body work. nice paint. sweet rims. better tranny and a 383 stroker thrown into it with a super charger.

A fast MX3 would be funny. 200HP was great for around town and would be a blast in that car.

it would be pretty fun. but a 383 stroker with a supercharger on an old school porsche would be even better..

Haha. Awesome...

a 383 stroker is going to be awesome for the 944. Ron said he could fix the driver's side exhaust for $400. I'm going to see if I can get some nice block huggers for the passenger side to add clearance. Otherwise, it's going to be about $2000 for a set of new headers for this car. Fuck that. There won't be any power gains, it'll just look nice. So I'm going the cheap route on that...

a fast mx3 would be fine. But I do want to get my hands dirty. I desperately want experience doing this kind of stuff...

in large part, the experience sucks balls. it's cool for the easy bolt-on stuff, then it's a royal asspain for the stuff that doesn't go exactly according to plan. then you realize, fuck I'm really good at X, it's a lot cheaper to just do more X and pay someone who does Y all day long to do Y for $rhodeisland while I make $texas doing X.

Sorry I missed this thread before, but have you talked to the guys at corksport.com?

I used to be an MX-3 owner, and the guys at corksport were great when it came to sourcing parts.

(and for the record for the naysayers, this is not a PITA project, it's straightforward and easier than shit *IF* you can find a BP-ZE)

Putting a turbo on a car without one and programming a stand alone EMS is a PITA. If you just mean placing another FWD engine by the same company in with the same mounts I agree with you. That isnt even worth doing though.....

Yeah. Screw the engine swap... for now...

He was referring to the engine swap. It's almost a direct drop in. You can retain the OEM wiring harness. You have to add 2 wires in addition, but otherwise is a direct swap. BP_ZE's seem hard to come by... I called Corksport last week in regards to some suspension components... Aftermarket Mazda Speed and Corksport parts are cheaper than OEM!!! Hell, they don't make springs for the MX3 anymore. The dealership said the warehouses are just about empty (no rear springs available, only fronts ), thus, a set of front springs was going to run $380. I can get a complete set of H&R lowering springs for $150

Car is doing fine. I've beat the piss out of it on occasion and it's holding up great. I'm in no rush to do anything with it. If something happens, I've got 2 other cars...

I'm talking on and OFF road!

I'm still knocking dirt off my undercarriage from last spring's muddy trails when camping. And I need a new header. A rock hit mine and it looks like someone took a sledge hammer to it

The mx-3 is in need of tires and suspension. Rears are like 95% bald. Fronts have about 90% tread though. I really would like to see how well this car could handle with Mazdaspeed/Corksport suspension... After I fix the Porsche up to where it's auto-x ready, I'll be throwing money at this beast for fun
