i joined years ago during a blood drive (for free)

they actually called last year because i was a match for a leukemia patient but after i sent in the paperwork they said the patients status changed... which probably means he progressed worse and either died or was no longer able to get the donation.

i have to say, when they called it was very moving to be the potential match that could save someones life. it was very powerful.

in their defense, typing marrow is EXPENSIVE and it's not nearly as widely known and supported (or as cheap to run, for that matter) as blood donation

in almost all cases, these promo codes (or free typing events like at blood drives) are the result of a private monetary donation to increase the database and awareness

I cant give blood or marrow because i had leukemia as a kid. Mine did not require a marrow transplant though, I was lucky. If I was allowed to, I gladly would though

yes please do it!

my mom was scheduled to have a BMT. we thought she was lucky cause she had 3 brothers, each with a 25% chance of being a match....none of them were. obviously she never had one, but she also got WAY more than one bone marrow biopsy (and most cancer patients do)

yes, IF you get chosen and pass all the steps it will hurt, but you can potentially save a life AND the pain you go through is likely nothing compared to what the person you are donating has gone through. and you aren't only touching their life, you are touching all those that know them.

it doesn't hurt to join the registry though.

for christmas i'm asking friends and family to donate blood and if they feel like doing a bigger deed, to join the bone marrow registry.

i joined the registry a loooonnngggggg time ago in school. I can't believe they found me after all these years and numerous address changes. After talking to a representative she explained that i was a possible match and i could possibly save someone's life. She could tell me only very minimal details of the patient but that was ok. She said there would be a series of visitis to the clinic, some which would not be pleasant but bloodwork was step one. (You can withdrawal at any stage for any reason.) I was sent to a clinic for some blood samples and then waited for weeks to hear something back in anticipation. A month went by and still nothing. I emailed the lady and she explained that it takes a good while to do all the tests, sometimes up to 8 weeks. About a week after that i got a letter explaining that i was no longer needed because the patient's status had changed. (condition worsened, doctor opted for another method of treatment, patient recovered etc.) I was extremely crushed......not only because i couldn't help save a life but i naturally assumed that the person on the receiving end wouldn't make it

I'm still on the registry though and would do this again in a heartbeat
