What would some strips of "metal tape" on the back of a set of irons be used for? Like, little strips of metal that are applied in layers to the back of the golf club. I'm assuming this is a weighting thing, but not entirely sure what it would be for or how it might affect play.

and...
If you had to choose between keeping a set of Ping I3 irons or Mizuno TC 29 irons which would you choose? Just saying if you already had both sets and were planning to only keep one.

The right reason for using lead tape is to increase the swingweight of the club; i.e., to increase the feel of more weight or "heft" in the clubhead. For that purpose, one 4-inch-long strip of half-inch wide lead tape will increase the swingweight of any club by one point, as in from D0 to D1.

Most golfers will detect a difference in the headweight feel of a club when the swingweight is increased by 2 or 3 swingweight points, but only the most sensitive feel players will ever note the difference of 1 swingweight point.

When should you think about experimenting with adding lead tape to the clubhead? If you sense that you can't feel the presence of the clubhead in the swing, if you feel that you fight being "too quick" with your swing, of if you are experiencing a fairly high incidence of shots hit off the heel of the face, adding lead tape to increase the swingweight very well could help improve the problem.

^ Good info. I guess the previous owner of these clubs liked them a little heavy. I don't think I've played enough to have a preference.

What about the other question...If you were going to sell one set, either the Ping I3's or the Mizuno TC29's, what would it be? The Pings are incomplete, but I can't remember what club(s) are missing. The Mizunos are pristine and complete (3-PW), but I haven't hit with them yet.

For the irons I would have to know how good you are to keep them. If you are a pretty good player 10 or less handicap then you should keep the Mizunos. If you are still beginning and not that good yet, stick with the Pings. Ping is about the most forgiving set of irons out.

Butch Harmon=elite golf swing coach (Tiger's instructor)

I think his point being that he first thought that "tim" was providing unique commentary regarding lead tape, but then realized it was simple plagiarism

If they are centered on the club, it is a pure weight thing.

If they are more towards the toe or heel of the club, then they can be used to counteract a slice or hook by slowing down the closing of that part of the club.

And I would hit both irons and decide which feels the best for me (both are good though imo)

Uh.. you keep the set of irons you feel that you play the best with. Now there is a difference between blade and cavity back irons... I haven't shopped for irons in a while but I feel like many brands will have the same model in cavity back or blade.

Blade (left), Cavity Back (right)

Cavity backs are more forgiving, blades give more control to experienced golfers.

^^ They're both cavity back. I've been using the Pings for a little over a year. I'll probably just stick with them, but I need to get one or two of the shafts replaced because the previous owner was a hothead who liked to break stuff when he wasn't playing well.

I don't think I with good enough consistency to say it is the fault of the iron if I play well with one and not the other though. At the driving range I'm usually doing well to come within 30 yards in any direction of the closest flag with my irons.

Not anymore. Harmon coaches Adam Scott.

Tiger's swing coach is Hank Haney now.

Speaking of clubs...I have these for sale if anyone is interested. They're definitely OBO. I just posted them up for $120 to see if I would get any bites.

These are not the Mizunos I was talking about in this thread, but they'll probably be for sale soon too. I do want to hit with them at the range one day first.
