I got a car from a guy that I trusted and still do as knowing he was doing the right thing.
He got it from a man in Alabama that put the car together and did all the work.
apparently the title doesnt match up to the numbers on the car and it seems as if since the car is pieced together and none of the numbers match anywhere to the title that it cannot be said year or model car. In addition they stated that it was illegal to sell someone a car like that.
my question...where do i go from here?
sue the guy that sold it to me or the guy in Alabama? Hope to recover the original title I sent in to DMV but doubt that EVER happens rebrand the title as a 2009 Custom and bring the value of the car WAYYYY down?

Was there a bill of sale?
On a car like that you need to check everything. 9/20/2009 8:28:03 PM |

The legal way: Take the VIN off the chassis to the DMV. Preferably one that doesn't have cops on site like they do downtown. Ask them to A.) See if it's stolen. B.) Give you the name of the last registered owner. You'll have to fill out some paperwork and they'll probably send you downtown for this. If it's in another state, well good luck.
Once you have this information you can try to contact him(if that works, he can just sign a replacement title). When that fails, you can apply for a bonded title. You'll have to put up a significant nonrefundable cash bond based on the value of the car or go through an insurance company. If at any time anyone else claims it's theirs, you lose the car and the bond.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Or... Register that mofo with the understanding that after 40 years a little paperwork is bound to get messed up. If it's ever stolen you're screwed. If you ever want to sell it at auction or something, well forget about it. But I guarantee if you put a '67 vette on craigslist it'll be gone by nightfall. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OR .......
Build a race car.
*********************** Wait, who is "they"? So you don't even have the title that came with the car any more? How did the issue of matching numbers even come up? Were you trying to get the car inspected by the DMV or something?

I watched them take some poor soul away at the counter at New Bern Ave a few weeks ago. He wasn't a mexican, and I couldn't hear the details.

Talk to a lawyer to find out whether you should file suit against one or both of the previous owners. 9/21/2009 12:01:33 PM |

Another option: That car is probably worth more in parts than it is as a whole.
Since the DMV is already aware of your situation, I'd say your options are limited. I guess a custom built title is possible, but I'd imagine they're pretty anal about how it's put together. 9/21/2009 2:13:57 PM |
