I have an HP dv4-1124nr that doesn't boot up, I think i killed the hard drive. The other night it was running fine while sitting closed on the table. I went to open the screen with on hand, and the rather than opening, the whole unit lifted up. It slipped out of my hand and fell back to the table from about 6". I didn't really think much of it, it continued to run fine for a while. then it started making random clicks and beeps, so i decided to restart it. Only it never restarted. I can get into to the factory recovery screen. the first time i tryed it asked if i wanted to make a back up, and i clicked yes. It asked me to plug in a usb drive, so i plugged in my external usb HD. It spun for a while then eventually said it needed to be a NTFFS formated drive - try again. There's really nothing on the laptop i can't live without, so i said screw it, just skip the back up and do your thing. It started the restore process, but got hung up at 18%. I left it over night with no progress. I powered it off, removed the battery, and tried again. It continues to get hung up at 18%, only now it doesn't ask if i want to back up my files.
any thoughts? 9/23/2009 10:10:43 PM |

Yeah, HD is probably shot.
I have a brand new 160GB serial laptop drive that I'll sell for $50. I can even install it if you'd like.

i monkeyed around with it last night for a while, i can get into the bios and everything, but the drive test fails every time. dumb question, can i just intstall a new HD w/o reinstalling the OS? I never made a startup disc. also, are there generic one size fits all laptop HDs (in form factor) or are they specific to make/model of the pc?
^i apprecitiate it, but i'm not in the raliegh area
