See: http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/academic_affairs/courses_undergrad/REG02.20.15.php
The student's performance in a credit-only course will be reported as S (satisfactory grade for credit-only course and given when course work is equivalent to C- or better) or U (no credit grade for credit-only course). The grade for a credit-only course will have no effect on the student's grade point average. Credit hours for the credit-only course will be counted in the cumulative hours attempted.
Students should be aware that many graduate and professional schools evaluate credit-only courses for which U grades were awarded as failing grades. 10/6/2009 4:55:51 PM |

Perhaps give us a bit more background of what you are trying to do? Having a "U" or "NR" on your transcript doesn't look too hot, but, like anything else, if can be explained does not really matter. And, remember, for audit you need a "D" to get through, credit you need a "C". 10/6/2009 10:35:13 PM |

^ what do you mean by "get through". I thought with audit you just basically sat in on the class and no grade at all was assigned, yet you still had to pay the tuition. I always assumed if you wanted to audit a class you would be better off just showing up to observe, and not having to pay? 10/7/2009 3:56:25 AM |

An audit is formally recognized on your transcript. You either receive recognition for taking or, or no recognition for taking it. Most instructors with an audit do what you say, show up and you'll get the audit recognition. Others impose other requirements on audit students, i.e. must make a minimum of a "D" grade or complete X assignments or ... to receive recognition.
And yes, you are required to pay for an audit, but, unless things have changed ... I think anything over 12 credit hours is still "free" anyways? But, yes, to your point, if you wanted the knowledge, you could potentially show up to any class randomly throughout the semester and be a silent observer. So long as you clear it with the instructor ahead of time, most typically have no problems.

You have until Friday the 16th to decide. Would recommend checking in with an advisor before doing anything. Too many details "what happens if I do X course of action" to cover in a TWW thread.10/7/2009 8:26:47 PM |

If you're willing to jump through paperwork hurdles, you can drop a class at pretty much anytime before final grades are posted. Of course, you have to get signatures from advisors, instructors, deans, Jesus, etc... 10/8/2009 1:46:04 AM |

^if he drops under 12, financial aid goes to shit, regardless of signatures and whatnot

How do people look at S on a transcript? Do employers care if classes were taken for just credit? 10/9/2009 2:51:09 PM |
