my gf has lived in the same complex (wildwoods on jones franklin) for several years and always liked it...she's in a bottom unit, so it's a bit dark, but it generally stays cool all summer and she rarely used the A/C in previous years

this year, though, it's ALWAYS felt muggy in her apartment...her bed, her couch, her chairs - they all feel kind of damp and she's been running the A/C almost constantly and it's always felt warm and humid...she complained to the management and they supposedly checked her unit and said everything was fine

about a month ago, she went to get some shoes from her hall closet and noticed some mold on them...she didn't really check the rest of the closet, just assumed that she had put them up wet

about a week ago, after being gone for a few days, she was in her closet and noticed that ALL of her clothes have mold on them...all her jackets, shirts, pants, shoes, everything...she brought them to the office and they're in the process of dehumidifying her apartment and running an ozone machine

she asked about getting her clothes dry-cleaned and the management said that her renter's insurance should take care of it...now, she doesn't have renter's insurance (i never did, either, whether that's dumb or not), so that's not going to happen...i'm of the opinion that her complex should pay for it since she brought the issue of humidity to them well over a month ago and they did nothing...are they responsible for this? or is she just SOL for not having purchased renter's insurance?

EDIT: ALL of her closets (hall and the two bedrooms) have mold in them...she doesn't hang up any of her laundry wet, and we can't find any leaks

Don't know about the clothes situation but I definitely wouldn't stay in that same apartment, regardless of whether they dehumidified and ozoned it.

no. one, she didn't push for anything to be done. two, any standard lease states that the company is responsible for the structure and making it habitable. your responsibility is what is contained within that dwelling.

renters insurance is cheap.

also there is something wrong with that place, she needs to move into a new unit, as was mentioned above.

yeah, she's moving out shortly, but not for another month or so...i don't think she cares that much, since she just stays with me, anyway

ah, if it's not their responsibility, then fair enough...heaven knows i'd throw a fit and threaten all kinds of things, but that's me

Every apartment I have rented required me to have renters' insurance, but maybe that's just a Greensboro thing.

they are responsible for dehumidifying, fixing the ac and taking care of mold on the structure. i doubt she'll have any luck getting them to pay for dry cleaning her clothes, especially if she didn't really press the humidity issue to start with. the best she's entitled to is a move to a new unit.



i think this has all been covered in the thread already.

and i haven't looked at many apartments that didn't either require or strongly suggest renter's insurance.

I had mold in my apartment and they came in and fixed it and paid my dry cleaning bills. When they installed the dryer, they screwed up the hookup so all the air coming out of the dryer was just going into my apartment. So the closets right near the dryer were all screwed up.

for those of you who are still under you parents domains, their home owner's insurance probably covers you for renter's insurance. just call pops and ask. mine is covered to something like 10% of the main policy value

I used to live at wildwoods. Her lease states that she is to have renter's insurance. So without the insurance, she is out of luck.

I had the same thing happen to me in a complex I lived in which did not require renter's insurance. Apartment complex never really fixed the problem. I learned not to keep clothing in my bedroom closet as a result while living there. Apartment has responsibility to fix it, but not to compensate for damages.

Pretty much SOL. , but, read the lease to confirm 100%, as I'm sure there is wording there in there saying "we are not responsible for damages". You'll spent more time and effort trying to fight it than simply moving on. Lesson learned, get renter's insurance, as yes, it is cheap, even for current students who are poor.

if you have state farm the discount you get for adding it to your car insurance almost covers it. i think it added 7 bucks a month to my payment for 25k worth of coverage.

dude, that sucks... but renters insurance is a good thing. I've not had to use it, but I've had it since I moved into an apt. It's maybe 10 bucks a month... maybe.
