You realize that if Hillsborough somehow starts to get as big as CH has been in the past they'll take steps to stop it, right?

Franklin St went from 80 k to 45k people, which I was opposed to the downsizing at first, but being able to walk downtown without feeling like a sardine, and having a much higher percentage of people in costumes as a result was actually kind of nice. The town & university pitch in together to spend over $200 k to facilitate the event, and will close off the street starting at 9.

A few tips for getting downtown I've used in the past. Ride a bus into downtown early before the street is closed off at 9pm, & ride a bus out at the end. Park at a friend's place who lives nearby and walk b/c Chapel Hill has sidewalks everywhere. Park at the University Mall where lots of cabs tend to congregate & pay like 3 bucks to get a ride & be dropped off as close as possible to Franklin St & then take a cab or bus back to University Mall.

Lots of pictures & a video in the chit chat thread:
http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=578459

I may try hillsborough street next year once the construction is gone.

Thirded. Athens puts all these other Halloween bashes to shame. It's worth the drive to do it once.

Haha, wow they are really pulling out all stops to downsize this event. Glad I went in its prime. I'll stick to Hillsborough Street now. Go State!

I think I might do Hillsborough St next year once the construction is gone. I figure if Franklin St is going to get smaller & smaller, might as well go one last time before it bottoms out, and Hillsborough St should be rocking next year when there no construction. And that'll be my last year at State since this whole MA thing only takes 2 years.

^^Congress played with daylight savings time a while back, and now the sundial at the planetarium in Chapel Hill only works at certain times of year. I guess this is just Mayor Foy getting his revenge. Mayor Foy and Ocarina of Time

In deciding on which Mayor Foy joke to go with, I passed up on a Hiro reference about bending the space/time continuum, or trying to make an effective Clock-Envy joke

Me too. And I almost didn't go in 2004 It was a fun experience being in a giant ass group of people all in costume. Too bad a couple of assholes and Chapel Hill have ruined the fun for future years.

The spread of H1N1 is an additional concern this year, town leaders said. Sick people should stay home.

I heard the State Fair was bigger this year than last year, and maybe its biggest overall turn out ever despite the recession & N1H1 fears.

If you went to the state fair and survived, then you can handle either Hillsborough or Franklin St.

Remember, Franklin Street closes to traffic at 9. So either get downtown by then, or fine somewhere to park & walk from, or take a cab in. I'm going to take a bus in while they are still running in about an hour or so and hang out with friends on campus until 9 when the street starts getting a lot of walkers.

Chapel Hill wasn't too bad tonight. The only problem I had was that all these mexican moms had to bring their babies out. They need to either get a babysitter or stay home. Young children do not need to be on Franklin Street on Halloween night.
The best costume I saw on Franklin was War Machine. It was just freakin awesome.
I'll post my pics as soon as I can.

Wow, I was wrong about Franklin St. I thought it would keep losing ground, but apparently with 1 year of practice, everyone knew how to get around the franklin st access restrictions, and WRAL & other sites are reporting that Franklin St was up to 50,000 this year, which is 15,000 more than last year.

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/6323062/

They are reporting 6,500 for Hillsborough St which is a nice improvement from last year too.

^How is a 50,000 person street party in the triangle area a lame event?

Seeing that Iron Man & Barrel Monster on Franklin St were probably some of the high lights of the night for me in terms of costume observation.

It's not lame the first time. It gets subsequently less interesting every year.

By that definition of repetition making a festivity lame, all annual festivities are lame. I for one have been to the State Fair many years in a row and plan to go again.

But with it being such a college & young adult oriented event there are plenty of newcomers each time with it being held in a college town & more generally in an area with a lot of colleges like the triangle. There were at least 15k ppl who were here this time that weren't last, so at least for them it wasn't lame.

What are you even talking about

It sucks because there are 50,000 people crammed onto one street

It was cool once, it's not that cool anymore

It's an opinion, dude. Of course there are people who like it. I'm sorry for dissing your street walking festival.
