it's a ryobi, pretty small (a bit bigger than one of those mantis tillers) and 2-stroke

friend gave it to me because he couldn't get it to work and the guy he took it to said it has bad compression...for something so small and relatively cheap, should i just toss it? i'd rather get it up and running, if possible

I think you should sell it to me for a song and a dance. Is it really one of the string trimmer heads with the snap-on/off tiller head? If so, I got a power head that will work with it.

The Ryobi power heads are cheap shit unless you have a pro grade one (I do). After having torn one down, I find it amazing that the damn thing doesn't fly apart. The connecting rod is multi-layer stamped steel.

commercial grade. haha. that thing's a piece of crap. you are time and money ahead of yourself to just throw it in the trash and start over.

But you can probably still sell it on Craigslist for like $30.

for real, my ryobi stuff has always taken a beating but that thing isnt big enough to dig a hole to bury it in.

Dan I have a string trimmer, curved shaft, takes standard attachments, only thing wrong with it is it needs a pull start.
