are these things worth the money? Do they even work? Or should I just get a rake and suck it up

If you have an area that is difficult to get to and accumulates leaves they can be nice. For example, leaves between the air conditioning unit and the little fence around it can't really be raked or blown out. My leaf blower can be used as a vacuum, so I just use that. I wouldn't buy a separate device for it.

These work best after you rake (by “afteR” i mean you rake the leaves into a smaller area, then suck them off up). They are not a replacement for a rake, unless you have a small yard.

^ i second that. You still have to rake. But it makes getting them into the bags a lot easier/faster.

Technically you could walk around and suck the leaves up i guess (depending on how matted down they are). But keep in mind that there is typically a hose that runs from the vacuum itself to a trashcan. That hose is only so long. So it's best to rake up a bunch of piles, suck one up, then move onto the next.

The only problem I've ever had with one is the part that fits over the trashcan not staying on so great. But there are way to work around that.

To answer your first question; if you have a big yard with a lot of leaves, it's worth it in my opinion.

It's cheap and awesome. At first, I thought it looked like a piece of shit, but at that price it was worth the gamble. It blows and vacs at 235 mph. With two huge oak trees in my back yard, I have been battling leaves for the past 3 years at my house and this thing and the accessory hose/spring bucket have made my life much easier. My neighbor has a much more expensive gas model and this thing is alot more effective than his. Blow the leaves into a pile, attach the hose to the bucket with trash bag and I'm done in no time. Oh yeah, I can also clean out my gutters in less than 20 minutes by getting on the roof with it.

Mine works well on dry leaves, but plugs if the leaves are wet. Honestly it is just as easy to rake the damn leaves and put them in a bag.

or run over them with a lawn mower that has a bagger. It also chops up the leaves pretty well (if you have a mulching blade) and can thus cram more leaves into the bag.

If you have landscaping that you want to clear leaves from, a vacuum/blower is what you need.

I use the Black & Decker LeafHog and yeah they're worth it. Blow all the leaves to one area, then use a rake to pile them up then suck em up. It mulches the shit out of the dry leaves and dumps easily into a Lowes brown bag so you use less bags and it's easier. Sticks and pinecones are a pain in the ass though.

It's way easier than raking the whole yard, and more fun.

I'm old school. I use a blower to get the leaves in a relatively nice pile, then rake them onto a tarp and then drag them to the curb for pick up.
