People get reprimanded on a weekly, if not daily basis.
As far as I know, the university itself doesn’t pursue people, but they don’t hesitate to respond to infringement complaints by the MPAA/RIAA/whoever. 11/22/2009 2:08:37 AM |

stay away from mainstream things and you'd probably be ok. If you're downloading movies, especially popular ones and ones that have been out for some time you are likely to be caught. I got my first letter a few years ago after downloading Back to the Future; ironically it was for a paper i had to write because all the blockbuster stores were checked out of it. 11/22/2009 4:44:29 AM |

i only got one. sorry that was worded horribly
basically i deleted the file, promised to never do it again and they let me off the hook. lots of TWWers with a similar story, dunno if it's still like that 11/22/2009 6:43:40 AM |

I was dl'ing AoE3 and the university told me that whatever RIAA-equivalent-for-games noticed I was downloading it and sent NCSU a cease and desist. They kept me anonymous.
I just apologized, deleted the file and stopped torrenting. I would not recommend downloading torrents on campus if at all possible.
Maybe try a seedbox? 11/22/2009 11:00:04 AM |

private trackers?
NCSU generally doesn't care what you do. If you get them in trouble then they have no choice. 11/22/2009 1:59:46 PM |

From what I've heard, NCSU does not hand over any of your information. They find you, tell you to cut that shit out and that's about the end of it. If they get multiple notices about you, then they'll suspend your network access.
However, if you cause them network issues, they'll just suspend your access before they even tell you. I was seeding a Linux image from my laptop once and after about 15-20 minutes of uploading at >1 megabyte / sec, I was disconnected from the network and couldn't reconnect. 11/22/2009 4:23:22 PM |

For the record:
NCSU students have been sued by the RIAA and NCSU will turn over identifying information if they are subpoenaed.
An Example Case: http://recordingindustryvspeople.blogspot.com/2007/01/index-of-litigation-documents.html#LaFace_v_Does1-38 11/23/2009 1:11:19 AM |

i wouldn't do it. I'm sure you have a friend off campus who uses torrents. Just have them download it for you and then you can bring a thumbdrive over and transfer. 11/23/2009 9:41:49 AM |

LEGAL Movies and music they don't care about. You are welcome and encourage to download "Steal this Film". COPYRIGHTED items which are illegal to download, think of it like speeding, lots of people do it, and if you get caught, you end up paying a penalty. Your choice on risk/reward ultimately.
Do some research and there are ways of preventing detection. But same as always, not 100% foolproof and can still get caught. 11/24/2009 2:24:59 PM |
