It was a dick move, no question, but things like this make sports more exciting...I like for their to be hate, villains and assholes
Quote : | "When Matt Barkley kneeled down to end Southern California's (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) victory in the final minute, UCLA defiantly stopped the clock with a timeout.
So the Trojans let 'er rip, throwing a long touchdown pass and then celebrating it with a taunting ferocity that brought the Bruins onto the field on the verge of a brawl." |

Quote : | "The overheated worlds of talk radio and message boards lead to extreme and highly emotional reactions, so in the wake of Saturday night's late dose of "L.A. Lather" - which you might have missed, given the poor quality of football in the UCLA-USC game - some finely-calibrated comments are in order.
As is the case with so many other situations, a simple thumbs-up or thumbs-down approach fails to make the grade as an assessment of the final minute of L.A.'s crosstown collision, which started just after 10 p.m. in the East and naturally ended well after 1 a.m.
While people on the East Coast were sleeping, a snoozefest of a slugfest between the sluggish Trojans and the banged-up Bruins found the height of electricity in the 60th minute of competition. With under a minute left and USC leading 21-7, Pete Carroll had quarterback Matt Barkley take a knee, in a gentlemanly attempt to get off the field and take a 14-point win over a neighborhood rival. However, that gesture - aimed at making the final minute quick and painless - was met with a timeout from UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel, who gave every indication that the Bruins were going to exhaust their three timeouts after USC's series of kneel-downs.
During the timeout, the Trojan braintrust talked about dialing up a long pass, and Carroll - irritated by Slick Rick's timeout and the prospect of two more clock stoppages - okayed the long ball. Barkley hit Damian Williams with a 48-yard touchdown pass, and that bomb ignited a powder keg inside the L.A. Coliseum.
The Trojans' bench - clearly aroused by an excited Mr. Carroll - whooped it up on the sidelines, inciting the UCLA team to come halfway across the field. A tense standoff developed for a few extremely nervous minutes before security officials intervened and the two coaches headed off a disastrous and ugly brawl... and just barely. When the game ended, UCLA's players were rushed off the field by security while USC stayed on the turf; violent incidents were averted, but the stench of ugliness filled the stadium just the same. I remember App State did that in the playoffs last (?) year too. Was pretty funny in my opinion. The winning team is trying not to run it up and you're calling timeouts in a hopeless situation, might as well go for the TD so you know what not to do next time.

Have no problem throwing the TD if UCLA is calling the timeouts. It's USC's job to score, it's UCLA's job to stop them.
The taunting/excessive celebration was unnecessary though. 11/30/2009 10:02:53 AM |

UCLA obviously still wanted to play, then they cry when the other team continues to play?
^At least USC was on their sidelines. The entire UCLA bench came 3/4th of the way across the field.

I have absolutely NO problem with this at all. From the second he was hired, Neuheisel has said he wasn't scared of the Trojans and they would prove it. He used the timeout solely to piss them off and SC basically said Fuck you, we're still much better than you and you have to deal with it.
SC conceded that they weren't going to try and score again and UCLA decided to prolong the game. Fuck them for not being able to back up their coaches actions and stop a play. 11/30/2009 10:03:58 AM |

it's a good thing that they were already losing because I think the officiating should take a stronger no tolerance position on things like that, start calling games and throwing forfeits if these 'SO TUFF' big ballas start trying to roll deep on each other like that 11/30/2009 12:14:10 PM |

^Seriously though, I don't have a big problem with it. I agree it was classless. And the reaction of the team was classless as well. It just creates more motivation for UCLA the next time you play them so why do it?
Just run the ball if they are going to call timeouts. If you break through and score on a long run, then you don't look like a dick. They just look worse. 11/30/2009 12:33:30 PM |

I'd say that emptying your bench and coming across the field in a confrontational manner makes you look worse than running up the score, but that's just me.
And yeah, since this wasn't a NCSU vs. UNC game I can just sit back and laugh at it. Besides running up the score in basketball isn't the same as running up the score in football. In football you almost have to run up the score every opportunity you get just to boost your bowl stock. 11/30/2009 12:43:56 PM |

If UCLA had all three timeouts left, they would have gotten the ball back after 4 kneel downs, so why not use them? USC was right to keep playing also. I mean yeah, Carroll threw the bomb to be a douche as evidenced by all the taunting afterward, but oh well... that's football, Nancy. Get over it. (The play was football; not the thuggery afterward.)

Most news articles are shitting on him pretty harshly
Its the difference between our collective TWW hivemind vs the conservative traditionalist 40 something sports writers
Quote : | " How stupidly self-serving was the stunt Pete Carroll pulled at the end of Saturday night’s USC-UCLA game? In a move that screamed “I am a classless egomaniac!” Trojans coach Carroll (who I generally think is a less-egregious offender than most of his peers. … But hey, this is a diatribe …) ran it up on his arch-rivals after Bruins counterpart Rick Neuheisel had the audacity to call a timeout in the final minute with his team trailing 21-7. I’m sure Neuheisel was simply trying to instill a never-quit-till-the-final-whistle mentality in his players, but to Carroll, this was license to play, “Who’s Your Daddy?” On the next play quarterback Matt Barkley ran a play-fake and went up top to receiver Damian Williams for a 48-yard touchdown. The worst part was Carroll’s smug, over-the-top, vindictive reaction on the sidelines, which predictably provoked a UCLA response (numerous players headed toward the ‘SC bench area) that could have led to a massive brawl. Even worse, when questioned about the move after the game, Carroll gave this condescending response: “You’re either competing or you’re not. We’ve been saying it for years. We’ve been living it for years. If you really believe in competing, if you really do, you’ll understand it.”
Gee, Pete, I guess you operate on a higher plane of competitive understanding than the rest of us, and the mere act of questioning your sense of competitive justice is a misguided affront to your greatness" |
Quote : | "What were you thinking, Pete?
Just two weeks after feeling as if he had salt rubbed in the wound by Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll exacted a similar measure of questionable sportsmanship on UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel, nearly inciting a riot at the middle of the field.
In case you missed it, as just about everyone East of Los Angeles likely did, Carroll called for a play-action pass downfield with his Trojans up by two touchdowns and less than a minute left on the clock. Matt Barkley found Damian Williams wide open streaking down the middle of the field, Carroll whooped it up, and the Bruins had to be restrained from charging the Trojan sideline.
Now, before anyone accuses me of being too touchy-feely in these matters, I don’t expect a team to go into a four-corner offense to spare the other guy’s feelings. On the topic of late-game tactics, I subscribe to the theory of Lou Holtz, who believed it wasn’t his job to stop his own offense. Generally, though, that should apply when there’s a decent amount of time left on the clock. However, what was Pete’s point with just 44 seconds remaining? The game was in hand, and if anything, he might have risked a sack and a turnover by dropping Barkley back in the pocket. Take a knee, shake a hand, and move on to next week’s regular season finale with Arizona.
Hey, for the sake of an already contentious rivalry, Carroll’s odd choice of play-calling isn’t the worst thing, right? It makes for good copy, gets the fans in Los Angeles frothing at the mouth, and generally raises the overall hostility level between the long-time rivals. However, from a tactical perspective, I just don’t understand the move. Rarely does something good come from embarrassing an opponent that’s on the schedule every year. Pete, as much as anyone, should know this after Harbaugh looked to run it up on him earlier in the month. " |

I hate when the media picks up shit like this (and "running up the score"). It's simple, if you, the losing team, don't want the other team to score, then stop them. If you can't stop them, then don't expect the winning team to just lay down. This applies from peewee league to the pros. 11/30/2009 4:46:48 PM |

victory formation is boring, TDs are exciting.
Since this was at USC, and the fans were annoyed with the timeout, Carroll owed it to them to pick things back up. That crowd was pumped, as if it was a last second game winner.
If this was @UCLA, I think they would have kept taking a knee regardless 11/30/2009 5:43:26 PM |

Yeah I don't agree with this. Because if the losing team doesn't have the ability to stop them playing fair, they will likely turn to other ways in an attempt to stop them.

There's a certain amount of discretion that's normally called for. If your opponent is down, then kicking him in the nuts simply isn't the decent thing to do. Sure you're completely in your rights to do it, but sportsmanship does count to a lot of people, and they won't like seeing someone who's defeated having it rubbed into their faces.
Of course, if the down opponent is still throwing kicks and punches or just spitting at you even though they're beaten then by all means please take that final shot to shut them the hell up. They need to learn that sometimes you're just beat and there is no getting back up. 11/30/2009 6:16:07 PM |
