Quote : | " Google Public DNS is a free, global Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service, that you can use as an alternative to your current DNS provider.
To try it out:
* Configure your network settings to use the IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers or * Read our configuration instructions.
If you decide to try Google Public DNS, your client programs will perform all DNS lookups using Google Public DNS. " |

I just read about this. It looks like it's comparable to OpenDNS. 12/3/2009 2:19:30 PM |

In order to test the speed of it against opendns and my local ISP's dns server I created a batch file with lines like so:
ver | time nslookup http://www.google.com 8.8.8.8 ver | time nslookup http://www.google.com 8.8.4.4 ver | time
I also created similar lines for OpenDNS servers and my local ISP. By subtracting the second timestamp from the first you get the amount of time the query took.
I ran it against Yahoo.com, Google.com, Facebook.com, and a friends obscure personal domain. In every instance Google's Public DNS was the slowest of the bunch. For arguments sake note that I'm located in London, England.
Here are the raw numbers: opendns1 - 23 13 13 21 27 10 41 opendns2 - 13 10 11 25 27 11 47 ISP1 - 12 20 13 14 14 10 33 ISP2 - 14 11 12 14 26 13 31 Google1 - 17 86 31 34 28 25 43 Google2 - 30 13 13 53 48 42 85
I'd be curious to see if others have similar results or if this is a byproduct of my location. " |

fastest resolution would to have a local dns box that keeps the full dns records on it ... thus you would never have to go out to the net to get the address you need.
... but of course, thats not exactly something most people would want to do ... 12/3/2009 9:14:31 PM |
