Traps

you can either choose lethal or non-lethal traps, but either way it's the best option

poison is a bad idea because the squirrel can crawl down into the wall to die, then you have an odor problem that is FAR WORSE than your squirrel problem was.

more importantly though, is figuring out how they are getting into the attic and closing that off

Seriously though, the most important thing is figuring out how they get in and sealing that up. There are some sonic deterrents you can buy that emit an ultrasonic noise to scare them away or nonlethal traps with a bit of bait will work.

Go with a non-lethal trap (after fixing the cause of having them come in, of course), take them out back and chop their fucking head off.

the one time I had them in the attic, i tried the pellet gun approach. just ended up putting a bunch of holes in the insulation.

If they are flying squirrels you might as well use lethal traps...if you release them outside of their environment they'll die anyway and if you release them near your house they'll just get back in. We have been having really bad problems with them, after trapping for months we are just going to call an exterminator.

we used traps in my parents house. Turned out the screen was torn at one of the attic vents.

Call a pest control guy. They should help you figure out the holes where the bastard is getting in, capture the thing so it can be released, and permanently solve the problem.

Sounds like you're an amateur. If it's a pump BB gun, you want to pump it about 20 times and blast the little guy right in the face. Hitting a squirrel in the body doesn't do jack, it's like they have titanium armor or something. Believe me, I would know.

Thanks for the suggestions all.

I think we're going to have to get someone to come in, although talking to my husband thinks he can trap them themselves. We've had mice/rats before (we live in an old house in the country, so it's not uncommon), but I'm pretty sure that is not what this is. We were sitting around and it sounds like a herd of somethingcrawling around and chewing around up there. If it's rats then they are REALLY big rats. I'm fairly sure it's squirrels.

i, too, live out in the country. just know that snakes are your friends when it comes to keeping rats and mice away from the house, so my advice is never EVER kill a snake.

They make these little one-way doors that you can put over the hole that they're using. Squirrels can get out, but they can't get back in. Once they're out you just patch the hole.

Be aware that they might have young up there. You'd need to remove them by hand if that's the case.

We had them and called an exterminator. We were informed that using lethal traps to trap squirrels is illegal. However, if your dog happens to kill them it's totally legit. We brought our parents' dog to the house and he killed a bunch of them. The exterminator put a non-lethal trap near one of their holes and caught 3 of them. We chased 2 others out of the house.
