Northern Portrait – Criminal Art Lovers
Quote : | "Northern Portrait emerged on Matinee’s roster a mere two months after they were founded, with a sleek, reverb-slicked sound — headed up by Stefan Larsen’s melancholy caterwaul — that harked back to the Smiths and nodded to contemporaries like the Mary Onettes and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart. The band formed in Copenhagen, Denmark, in the summer of 2007 (July, to be exact) with Larsen, Michael Sorenson, and Rune Reholt. Larsen and Sorenson had known each other since they were children, and had rehearsed together on and off again prior to forming the band." |

random insomnia-inspired local music thoughts of the hour:
veelee will probably put out an LP this year, and i am willing to put money on the fact that it will be highly enjoyable
also, i've heard rough mixes of the new future islands LP and it rules
ditto for the new lonnie walker EP 1/2/2010 6:33:05 AM |

y not...should be the end of Ringo Starr. However, Walk with you should be wedding song of the year. It's the only good song on the album (Paul saving him on this one). 1/2/2010 8:58:45 PM |

Got around to listening to Contra...it's pretty bad.
One good song ("Giving Up the Gun") and another I'm split on ("Diplomat's Son"), and that's it as far as decent tracks.
Not that I expected much, but still. 1/4/2010 5:29:53 AM |

A few of the bands I am looking forward to new releases from this year:
Dillinger Escape Plan Minus the Bear Jimmy Eat World deftones Arsis (honestly expecting this to be a little weak tho) This Will Destroy You MGMT JÓNSI Arcade Fire 1/5/2010 1:51:24 PM |

those two bands don't even deserved to be mentioned in the same sentence. Deftones were/are a very innovative/experimental band comprised of some seriously talented members (Abe Cunningham is still one of my favorite modern drummers) that just happened to get slapped with the "nu-metal" tag given to other bands like Staind, Disturbed etc.
Someone like Crazytown put out something like 1 or 2 absolutely terrible albums with 1 (still terrible) song that saw some commercial success. The deftones have been around for over 22 years with a full catalog of great albums. I know not everyone is going to like their sound and that's no skin off my back, but the deftones were around before, during, and after all the crappy "nu-metal" bands that record labels tried to lump in with them.
/rant
Back on topic though. I'm very interested to see what the new MGMT album sounds like. I really enjoyed the last album (even if it was a bit patchy with really good songs and ok songs) but kinda wonder if they are just going to fizzle out on this next one or what.

I'm not a big deftones fan, but they're definitely not in the same category as that other shit.
As much as I like Dave Fridmann's style, I hope MGMT go back to the more electro style they used on their EP as opposed to the way things were arranged on Oracular Spectacular. ] 1/5/2010 4:31:20 PM |

I can't decide what I think about the Vampire Weekend.
On first listen I thought it was cool they had had seemed to mature a bit, especially lyrically, but what happened to the hooks?
It's sort of uneventful, but I'll give it more spins.
I feel the same way about the new Midlake and it's killing me. I loved their last one so much and just knew they would blow my mind after waiting so long for another record.
I do think the Midlake is much stronger than the Vampire Weekend thus far, but my expectations were higher.
Of course, the last Midlake took me several listens to finally get into. 1/6/2010 12:29:16 AM |

and, I guess Danger Mouse's "niche" now is just to make beats for front men with Indy cred?
