We're too civilized for debtors prison but if you stiff the government out of a few bucks on liquor they'll let your ass rot. 1/7/2010 9:04:39 PM |

Not illegal if you don't intend to sell / transport it. 1/7/2010 9:18:32 PM |

^it's illegal to distill liquor for any reason without the required permits. remnants of prohibition still haunt us.
with that being said, just buy a fractional distillation set off of ebay. 1/7/2010 9:32:49 PM |

^^ ahhh, so that is the defining line between home brew / wine and hard alcohol. Interesting.
Glad to see they're focused on what matters. 1/7/2010 9:36:27 PM |

^^you can apply for a permit through the ATF to run a distillery for fuel purposes only, and they are required by law to expedite your permit. If you get caught without a permit though, you might as well have been selling the liquor to little kids for the charges you're going to get. 1/7/2010 10:38:18 PM |

A friend of mine makes rum every once in a while because it's relatively easy. Making a pot still is stupid easy, though, as already mentioned, a reflux still will allow you to make stronger stuff more easily. I don't think a crock pot would be a good choice, as there's not a very good way to regulate the heat. You can try to find a "water purifier" for sale somewhere if you don't want to build anything.
And as far as legality, very illegal
http://homedistiller.org/legal.htm (broken links to atf.gov) http://www.ttb.gov/spirits/faq.shtml#s7
"You cannot produce spirits for beverage purposes without paying taxes and without prior approval of paperwork to operate a distilled spirits plant. [See 26 U.S.C. 5601 & 5602 for some of the criminal penalties.] [...] Spirits may be produced for non-beverage purposes for fuel use only without payment of tax, but you also must file an application, receive TTB's approval, and follow requirements, such as construction, use, records and reports." 1/8/2010 9:43:24 AM |
