I would prefer a puppy, but would take one up to 2-3 years old.

getting one for that cheap is going to cost you 10x that in vet fees. i have an english bulldog and paid more up front but havent had a single health problem out of her

my cousin bought a cheap french bulldog and the dog is on all kinds of steroids, antibiotics, special food, special soap, etc etc.. not worth it

english bulldogs are known to have health problems, french bulldogs aren't nearly as prone.

i'm obviously not saying that by just paying more that you'll have less problems..but good breeders generally charge more. just do your homework with it or you'll end up with all kinds of health problems.

I've got to agree with ^ on this one.

Paying more up front does not guarantee the health of your dog, but purchasing from a responsible breeder is a safe guard against a number of heritable health problems. And responsible breeders simply charge more.

you've still gotta do a lot of homework before buying from a breeder too, dont just show up, then go home with a dog....its what I did, and my chocolate lab has bilateral hip dysplasia, and i've spent nearly 2500 on it already, with more to come.

I've been looking around for one myself, you don't have half a shits chance of finding one for that, or really under two grand. I've kept bulldogs my whole life, it is certainly different than any other type of dog. Before you get a "smushed face" breed (bostons, pugs, bulldogs) understand that the farts are worse, the snoring is worse, they don't like heat, and are inside-only dogs. You have to wash their face daily or they will get sores in their wrinkles. They are prone to hip issues, skin issues, and breathing issues.

That said, bulldogs and their other wrinkly cousins have more personality than any other breed of dog I've come across. We bred for awhile because Stellah was zero health problems, which is nearly unheard of for English Bulldogs. There will be the "ROAR INBREEDING ROAR" people, but so many breeds now are (have you seen Goldens lately? They are all SO small and blonde, not like the large red dogs that are traditional).
I think bullies are the best dogs around. I <3 them and everything that comes with it.

I've been on the hunt for a Frenchie, mostly because you get all the personality but they have much smaller poo. Honestly, I'll probably end up with an English, because I can take the extra grand I would spend on a French Bulldog and put it in an account to leave untouched except in a puppy emergency.

Something to look at- if you are interested in an adult, many breeders will sell off their bitches after they hit 4 or 5 and they feel its not healthy to breed any more. Often these dogs come with a contract saying that they have the right to visit, but if you don't mind, its a good way of getting a steep discount on a great dog. We fostered a girl for a while that a breeder friend just couldn't justify keeping anymore (Yes, they did everything ethically, but its still a business for them) and she was fantastic.

I have found plenty of Frenchies for $500 and some English Bulldogs being given away. Just because you've been around them doesn't mean you know their current market value (they are products).

Look up "puppy mills" then, for those dogs that are that inexpensive. Breeding is very expensive- they would barely make their money back at that rate.

And often inexpensive "English bulldogs" are often American Bulldog/ Pit mixes.

And yes, I've "been around," but I've also been pricing them the last month and a half.

And way to be a douche-bag to someone that was pleasantly helping you.

My fiance bought a french bulldog before she moved in. She got hers in Salisbury and paid $2000. It took a really long time to find one. Like others have said, do your research because they are an interesting breed. Our frenchie is stubborn as all hell, but its funny to watch her fight with our lab

Don't buy one for $500, its probably a puppy mill or it doesn't have AKC papers

You can also try looking up Frenchtons (they are boston terrier/french bulldog mix)

when it comes to dogs finding the cheapest is most definitely not the best approach (as was stated earlier)....we arent talking about a computer or TV....

and if youre counting the pennies on buying the dog are you going to do the same for care and treatment, food, etc? Would you take your kid to the cheapest doctor possible or find the best one? Yes I consider a dog a member of the family and should be treated as such.

It really irks me when people treat a dog (or any pet) as an "item" or product and try to be as cheap as possible. If you cant afford good quality then dont get one and dont support those who breed poor quality. Not directed towards you BlackDog just what Ive noticed after many years of owning and working with dogs.

This is where I got my boston a few months ago. They don't have any as of now but they are good breeders and seem to take care of their pups. I have not had any problems with mine yet. Also check WRAL.com I saw several there that were under 1 year old.

i will perpetuate the research good breeders bit. i bought a rottie in september and had been researching/visiting breeders for a couple months before i bought. like someone said - tvs and stuff of "x" model are understandable but with a dog the parents' health and breeder's responsibilities cant really be seen - only noticed years down the road.

on the other hand my fiance's roommate has a frenchie and i think she found it out of state - like colorado or something. not sure that i would trust that but he seems to be fine so far. he definitely play fights with my rottie like a dog twice the size. barks incessantly though.
