wait, wut?

http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Movies/01/11/avatar.movie.blues/index.html

Quote :
"James Cameron's completely immersive spectacle "Avatar" may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.

On the fan forum site "Avatar Forums," a topic thread entitled "Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible," has received more than 1,000 posts from people experiencing depression and fans trying to help them cope. The topic became so popular last month that forum administrator Philippe Baghdassarian had to create a second thread so people could continue to post their confused feelings about the movie."

Quote :
"A post by a user called Elequin expresses an almost obsessive relationship with the film.

"That's all I have been doing as of late, searching the Internet for more info about 'Avatar.' I guess that helps. It's so hard I can't force myself to think that it's just a movie, and to get over it, that living like the Na'vi will never happen. I think I need a rebound movie," Elequin posted.

A user named Mike wrote on the fan Web site "Naviblue" that he contemplated suicide after seeing the movie.

"Ever since I went to see Avatar I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na'vi made me want to be one of them. I can't stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it," Mike posted. "I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in 'Avatar.' "

Other fans have expressed feelings of disgust with the human race and disengagement with reality.

I fully support the idea of these people killing themselves.

The same thing happened with Twilight, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and Titanic.

This really is nothing new.

yeah this is what happens when people stop interacting with people in real life and resort to online communications. it's like a whole different world now than it was 20 years ago. creepy.

I, too, am obsessed with this movie. Not kill myself obsessed but I would like to be a part of the Na'Vi if they existed.

it's people like this that make me agree that suicide (for them) is not always a bad option... or that assisted suicide has its place in this world...

I already felt a disengagement from reality. So seeing this movie didn't affect me.

Actually I think it's the opposite. I think this is a symptom of overdosing on technology and modern society -- people want a return back to simpler things, I think.

people always think new forms of communication cripple social interactions. if anything, they ENHANCE our social lives

when i saw this movie i was pretty excited because the 3D shit + CG awesomeness really combined to make a new type of immersive experience

i related it more to a disney theme park ride rather than a movie.

i could see how people could become so immersed by the realism of it that they become attached to a seemingly "real" world

I honestly think you'd get the same effect if Planet Earth had done 3D work somehow, and if they had focused their documentaries more on primitive humans

I won't lie the prospect of being projected into a new body with a different sensory apparatus and then having sex with an alien sounds pretty rad
