Any mention of a way to merge your current gmail account and your current ncsu account? I've used the forwarding option in the past, and sometimes it forwards to my spam folder, so I gave up and started checking both accounts regularly. If I can merge them great, but if I'm still checking 2 gmail accounts on a regular basis, then I see no improvement here. 1/20/2010 5:51:46 PM |

you can forward the ncsu gmail account to the gmail account you use regularly. I only see this helping people who do not currently use google. 1/20/2010 6:14:25 PM |

While true, try to think of it as an overall improvement in the quality of NCSU email.
Also, this will probably screw up my current email forwarding.1/20/2010 6:20:14 PM |

Well you can pop one of the Google accounts from the other and apply whatever label you want to it. I have my hotmail account as a separate folder and it's popped every 30 minutes or something. 1/20/2010 6:20:46 PM |

Now we need to take care of all the annoying accessory systems we already have to deal with, but that's a different matter.

1) Faculty and staff are on/moving to GroupWise/WolfWise.
2) Google has IMAP access so it is possible to [slowly] move your stuff over. Don't know if that'l be different for the GoogleApps@NCSU implementation but I can't imagine it will be.
3) NCSU gmail for life will make it easier for NCSU to keep track of you (so you can get your transcript and unfettered access to donation opportunities). Lifelong identity management is tied in with the Shibboleth project when/if it replaces WRAP: http://oit.ncsu.edu/iam/shibboleth-federation-working-group
Supplanter, in addition to [2] you might want to look into using Gmail's multiple inboxes to manage your mail identity. 1/20/2010 8:36:09 PM |

Unity accounts expire after a ~3 month grace period after you graduate or separate from the university. You can have an alumni forwarding address but not your unityID@ncsu.edu mail. 1/20/2010 9:15:21 PM |

I knew this already, but it still makes me rage every time I think about it. I hate it with a passion. It makes me want to register for a PE just to enroll. If everyone was under one roof life would be so much easier, but that'd make sense and this is State.

squirrel mail is merely the webapp front end to an IMAP system.
You can download a squirrel male webapp, install it on your on server, and configure it to connect to your own IMAP server. 1/20/2010 11:42:17 PM |

^^ Actually, the Alumni Association just offers e-mail forwarding--not an e-mail account.

Quote : | "Congratulations, we're now provisioning Google Apps @ NC State accounts!
What Happens When I Have My New Account Provisioned?
1. Your request will be stored for processing in the order it is received. You can visit http://google.ncsu.edu/request to check the status of your migration.
2. Your new Google Apps @ NC State account will give you access to Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and other Google services.
3. All existing e-mail from your Unity/Webmail account will be copied into your new Gmail account.
4. Your new Gmail account will receive new email and be ready to use within 3 hours of when the creation process begins.
5. When the migration is completed, your e-mail address remains: <USERID>@ncsu.edu. Visit http://gmail.ncsu.edu and log in with your unityID and password as if you were checking your Unity/Webmail (though the login and interface will be different).
What About My Old E-mail Account?
Along with the creation of your new Gmail inbox, all of your previous e-mail from Unity/Webmail will be copied to Gmail. Any folders that you had created in Unity/Webmail will be migrated as labels in the Gmail web interface. Any e-mail that is sent to you between the time your account is created and the next server synchronization will be delivered to your Unity/Webmail inbox. You are welcome to forward any of the interim e- mail to your new Gmail account. You will lose access to your archived Unity/Webmail within 2-3 weeks of your Gmail account being created.
How Should I Prepare for the Migration?
We strongly encourage you to consider a few things before continuing with having an account provisioned to make sure your e-mail migration goes as smoothly as possible.
1. Delete any e-mail that you do not want to move to your Gmail account such as junk mail and anything located in your trash folder.
2. If you use the Address Book feature in the online Unity/Webmail interface, make sure you backup your address book so you can easily import it into Gmail. Any information you have in your address book WILL NOT be migrated along with your e-mail. For instructions on migrating your contacts visit:
http://google.ncsu.edu/help/export-webmail-contacts.php
3. If you have a forward set up to send e-mail off campus using the USMDB service, then you will need to delete that forward if you want to receive email in your new Gmail account.
I'm Ready! How Do I Have My New Account Provisioned?
To have your new account provisioned visit http://google.ncsu.edu/request and log in with your UnityID and password. " |
