I made a backup of my lib in June 2008, and now that I want to restore to my laptop after a recent reformat, iTunes doesn't say anything when I put the first (or any for that matter) DVD in. I used iTunes to make the backup. It doesn't even appear in Windows Explorer, either. I know there is data on the discs - I can see it on the back. It works fine when I put in a normal CD.

does your laptop have a dvd drive? 1/25/2010 5:33:00 PM |

true.
This is the same laptop that I made the backup from. So, naturally, it will have a DVD drive. 1/25/2010 5:33:56 PM |

so, interestingly enough, his laptop recognized it. (he has vista and i have xp)
looked for a driver update from gateway for the drive = nothing.
I made the backup using the drive's DVD burning function. So, I guess at one point I had the correct driver to read a DVD at least?
It can also play DVDs currently through VLC.
wtf

yea theres not really going to be a driver for a cd/dvd drive like that. They all use the same system provided driver. Go into device manager, find the drive, and make sure its not giving any errors. Aside from that idk. Thats pretty wierd. 1/25/2010 5:44:53 PM |

it works in another DVD drive but not yours so you aren't willing to try new hardware. *shrug* good thing you aren't here looking for help. 1/25/2010 5:50:56 PM |

I would LOVE to try other hardware if i could AFFORD it right now. Sorry I'm not floating in cash like you, but I'm looking for software solutions. Please don't be a dick. 1/25/2010 5:54:55 PM |

lol? If its not a software problem there won't be a software solution...there isn't 'being a dick' about that. Which is why I suggested it might be a hardware issue in the first place. Furthermore, I don't assume to know your financial situation or care to know anything about you other than the problem you posted, so I would recommend you do the same.
I've had internal burners die on me where I couldn't burn a disc but I could read from some media types.
ask to borrow one...I'm sure someone on here or maybe someone you know might have one. Worst case, return it when you're done for a full refund. At least you'll have your music.1/25/2010 6:00:28 PM |

Nevermind, just found a patch for a new driver.
Golovko please don't offer to help me unless you can actually provide help.
It's been a while since we hung out, so I can't blame your inability to actually provide a solution within certain constraints. 1/25/2010 6:06:22 PM |

make an ISO from the computer that can read the disk
(use powerISO to make it)
then get that file on to your computer somehow.. mount it to a virtual drive via powerISO
..

i didnt feel like making a new thread but i thought this was weird:
i was at my mother in laws and she wanted to use an old nano so i dled itunes for her, it was 15mb on her xp machine but theres only one option, you don't choose the operating system
then i get home and update MY itunes and its 105mb on my windows 7 machine
are there different versions its just not telling you about and making up its own mind when you hit download or am i missing something here? 2/6/2010 11:14:21 PM |
