Looks a ton better than the current one. The main thing that makes it look better is the headlights. Nicer grill as well, and the body looks smaller, tighter, sexier.

Oh man... the new model looks worlds apart from the current one... in comparison, the current one almost looks like a granny car! the new one looks so much more aggressive and tighter. and it is in fact smaller.

I can't believe it is 2 inches longer than outgoing model... looks way shorter than current one!
400 pounds lighter than outgoing model!
And it is fucking HAWT.

Sorry, I just don't "get" the Cayenne.
Crossover-type SUVs are completely pointless to begin with. They're a solution in search of a problem. Spending beaucoup money to have a fast-ish one with a Porsche nameplate is even stupider. 2/28/2010 10:58:19 PM |

I do, it's a fast as fuck SUV. Super comfortable, every creature comfort you can imagine, and you can pass any dipshit on the highway who is driving and talking on their phone at the same time. You can take them pretty much anywhere, they can do moderate towing, and can be used as a family travel car.3/1/2010 12:44:57 AM |

haha, for our purposes this would be our minivan alternative. fuck a minivan.
but realistically, I don't want to spend that kind of coin on any car, ever.3/1/2010 10:00:09 AM |

yeah, I get that it's the ultimate minivan. That's exactly WHY I don't "get it".
Spend $5k, 10k tops on a decent used minivan, or a Tahoe or something if you need to tow or whatever...then buy yourself a nice Cayman S or 911/997. 3/1/2010 10:32:14 AM |

you know a lot of people that race SUVs? really?
Quote : | "Super comfortable, every creature comfort you can imagine," |
i take it you believe that porsche is the only car company to produce a loaded, comfortable crossover-thing?
Quote : | "and you can pass any dipshit on the highway who is driving and talking on their phone at the same time." |
whoop-de-fucking-do...i drove down to pinehurst on saturday doing 90 in my saturn...i passed anyone not going as fast as me and i didn't need a porsche...i was breaking the law and driving faster than i should have been, no doubt, but the FACT is that speed limits make this kind of power relatively pointless
Quote : | "You can take them pretty much anywhere, they can do moderate towing, and can be used as a family travel car." |
this statement is stupid because the number of people who will take their porsche "pretty much anywhere" can probably be counted on one hand...i'm quite sure that the target demographic has no desire to go off-roading (unless by "anywhere" you mean anywhere there are actual roads, in which case i dare say that just about any car will do this)...the number of vehicles that can do "moderate" towing is very large, so it's not unique to this single porsche vehicle...and yes, you can use it as a family travel car, just like you can any number of other models
let's just be honest here...this car exists for NO other reason than to be a status symbol...which, as far as i'm concerned, is just fine...as long as the people who own them aren't so pathetic as to try to make it out as anything BUT a status symbol
there are several crossover/mini-SUVs options that do every single thing that the cayenne does EXCEPT go fast as hell and have a porsche badge...and since they'll have rare cause to use the engine to its potential, you're paying exclusively for the status associated with the badge

Based on your first statement, it sounds like anything faster or nicer than a Saturn is just a status symbol.
Quote : | "Spend $5k, 10k tops on a decent used minivan, or a Tahoe or something if you need to tow or whatever...then buy yourself a nice Cayman S or 911/997." |
Ok, but what happens when you do this and find yourself driving the minivan 29 days per month because you can't fit your family/coworkers/whatever in the Cayman S? Driving a Cayenne Turbo 30 days per month is better than driving a minivan 29 days per month and a Cayman 1 day per month.
Not everybody wants to buy four different vehicles to fill each niche that they might want to fill.

i understand your point, but NO ONE buys a cayman because it's practical...they buy it for style and a fun drive...and if you drive a cayenne with your KIDS in the car the same way you'd drive a cayman when you have an itching to go fast, you're probably a shitty parent...have you really met a lot of people who constantly complain about not being able to race their SUV?
look, i realize that the reaction of most people who like this car is to pretend that those who don't are just bitter because they can't afford it (or refuse the spend the money on it)...but an SUV that drives like a premium sports car (with a ridiculous premium price tag to match) doesn't fill a niche, it's a solution looking for a problem (as was mentioned before)

I constantly wish my 4Runner had about another 100 HP and was 300 lbs lighter. Quick and good handling isn't just for racing.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Americans love SUVs. And Porsche has made a hella nice one that is fast and handles well. For reasons I can't explain, car people seem to hate on that.
It's like you're angry that people who drive SUVs are no longer being punished with poor handling and sluggishness.

if wishes were horses, all men would ride...i'm pretty sure that with unlimited funds, you could MAKE your 4runner 300lbs lighter and modify it to make 100hp more (i suspect for less than half what this car will cost, too!)
Quote : | "Quick and good handling isn't just for racing." |
i never said that it was...what i HAVE said is that its only purpose is as a status symbol because there's no other excuse for paying as much as costs when there's little opportunity to utilize the features it touts (power and handling in particular) in a real-world, real-driving situation (ESPECIALLY when you consider that the main draw is that it's for "families")
Quote : | "It's like you're angry that people who drive SUVs are no longer being punished with poor handling and sluggishness." |
welp, you got me pegged! i don't see the point in something crazy expensive that has no obvious purpose and so i'm OBVIOUSLY angry and hate SUVs and the people who drive them, and kittens
Quote : | "agree, makes for a fun family mover" |
this is such a retarded statement...who the hell drives their FAMILY around in a "fun" way? i don't care what your opinion is on the vehicle and it's niche (or lack thereof), but if you drive this car in a "fun" way while you have kids in the car, you're being an irresponsible douchebag (unless your idea of fun and mine are different at the price level)
Quote : | "but the thing.is, it doesn't drive like a good sports car. It does well for a stupid gayass crossover thing. Those are two different things." |
yeah, i'm making the assumption that it handles well...because if i don't assume that it's like driving any other porsche, then it really DOESN'T have anything going for it...all that said, i've never driven a cayenne, so i can't imagine how this one will handle

I'm pretty sure you can utilize the features every time you hit an on-ramp or carve up a desolate road.
Quote : | "but the thing.is, it doesn't drive like a good sports car. It does well for a stupid gayass crossover thing. Those are two different things." |
What are you basing this opinion on? I'm pretty sure this thing handles very well. It's never going to be a 911 around corners, but I bet it'd give most of the sports cars you would consider owning as a DD a run for their money in the handling department (which would be a pretty big feat for a 4500lb SUV).
The current model which has less power and weighs hundreds of pounds more did 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, a 12.6 second quarter mile, had a top speed of 177 MPH, and pulled .91g on the skidpad. How can you not see the appeal in those numbers? This isn't a car for working people, but if I were extremely wealthy I could see this being the vehicle I hop into on a daily basis.

Dude, I wholeheartedly agree that it's impressive. You don't have to plead the case, there. I'm just saying that it's utterly pointless.
...and no, it would not compare to a high-end sports car, period.
It makes far more sense to either have 2 vehicles, one as a people mover/practical vehicle and one as a bad ass sports car, or to buy something like an M5 (just as one example). 3/1/2010 2:43:50 PM |
