I have to go to downtown raleigh in the courthouses to complete a paper for a course (PS 308). has anyone who has been there know a place that has free parking allowed and your car will not be towed? also needs to be not too far from the state capitol. thanks

There is a parking deck somewhere around hargett and fayetteville intersection I believe. A few blocks from the capitol. Drive around there some and you'll see green P signs on the lamp posts.

there's a deck directly across from the courthouse. Think it's $1/hr. Good luck going down in the middle of the day and NOT paying to park. But if you park in that deck, you can pretty much walk wherever you want.

Just take the R line. Park at one of the satellite lots and take it in.

ok, so do you know any good satellite lots to park at? \

also if I choose to park in the deck do I have to keep coming back there after every hour and paying $1 or can I just pay $5 at once and park there for 5 hours straight?

make sure you bring exact change, no credit cards or etc at the deck

[Edited on February 3, 2010 at 10:54 AM. Reason : exact change being $1,$5 etc.]

i've never needed exact change to park in that deck, or any of the other decks I've parked in downtown. Not saying there aren't some that don't require exact change, but that's never been an issue for me.

I'd just park in a deck. Maybe it's just me, but i'd rather pay a few bucks to park for a few hrs and know that the worst thing that will happen if i take longer than expected is that it will cost me another $1... as opposed to the cost of getting a boot removed or getting over to and getting my car out of a tow yard.

Bus is free with your student id, but you're also depending on the bus. Hasn't been a great experience for me in the past.

while the bus fares are waived for students, it takes more than your student ID to get on now. you have to go get a GO pass, which is free to students, but only available at their office or something like that.

i have the go pass but apparently you cannot bring cell phones into the courthouse or they will confiscate them or put it somewhere where it can be stolen so I can't take the bus (I would need it if i took the bus)

Who the hell told you that? I go to the courthouse weekly for work. They will NOT take your cell phone, just knives, clippers, and generally anything that isn't allowed on a plane.
Good luck finding free parking. It's basically impossible. The Sheraton deck is where I usually go, or the giant one for the courthouse. Make sure you have cash if you do the Sheraton deck. There's an ATM on 1 and on 6 I think (whichever floor has the courthouse deli).

which courthouse do you go to? so I can take the phone with me inside of a courtroom?

just checked google maps, what if I park in the post office parking lot and just walk, they wouldn't do anything right?

I don't know which class PS 308 is or what you're doing - but are you going to a courthouse or multiple courthouses? I go to the Wake County Courthouse. You can bring cell phones in to the courtroom, but you have to have them on silent.
Don't push it with the parking, just pay the few bucks.
If you're doing the federal courthouse as well, I can't really help you. Who told you about the no phones?

hello, i am going to 3 courthouses and one of them needs to be the regular one which is located at 316 fayetteville st - is that the one you are talking about? it is to write a paper about what it is like to observe a court room. also about the no phones it was stated in the rubric for the assignment by the teacher but I am guessing now that it means for the other courts?

Park by State and take a CAT/TTA bus in to downtown. Flash your State id card and you can ride for free.

teacher probably said no phones b/c in the past someone wasn't smart enough to turn the ringer off or answered the phone or something in a courtroom and had it taken. That or he/she is just trying save some dumb ass student from having their phone taken. If he/she can influence at least half the class to not take the phone to the courthouse at all, he/she may be saving the students, courts, and him/herself a bit of a headache.

I know of several no-permit parking spaces around NCSU. if you really want to take the bus, pm me and i'll fill you in.

But man, can you really not afford $3 to park in a deck for 3hrs? That's going to be so much better than waiting on and riding the CAT. You'll get there when you want, leave when you want. Your car is never late picking you up. I use to walk, ride a bike, or take the CAT everywhere I needed to go. It sucked giant donkey balls compared to driving. Shoot, I will give you $3-5 dollars to park if you really don't have it.

And FYI, the big court house is done at 3pm I believe (or at least certain courtrooms are). Not sure how much time you'll need, but plan accordingly. Not sure of the hours at the other places.

i have over a 1,000 + dollars saved up but it is still worth not the money if i can park somewhere free. also it is 1 dollar for every 30 minutes now. sorry if i sound cheap but i can't believe i have to pay money just so i can complete a school assignment, its pretty rediculous

talking about the wake county court house. They may close at 5, but some of the court rooms stop hearing cases at 3.

1,000 dollar bucks huh, well good for you. You're a freshman or sophomore huh? You should try to look at this no different than a text book (maybe a notebook would be more analogous in cost) or any other supply you may need to buy for class. Ask the design school students how much they spend on supplies. Or engineering students or tech. ed. students how much they spend on projects for their classes in addition to their text books. Or education students who are strongly urged to not work while student teaching (which is VERY time consuming and is not a paid gig). A few bucks to park downtown for a class assignment is kinda trivial.

check you inbox, I sent you the location of a spot near campus to park for free.

well i found a place: The US Post Office, which is at new bern ave, but close to downtown, so I could park there and I don't think they will do anything. if that doesn't work I might do the bus

the price might be justified if I just went there for like 3 hours but i need to go there for 10 hours thats like $20 wasted

also why the hell they keep making it more expensive??? says on the brochure $1 per hour then says $1 per 30 min on the website wtf.

The attendants in the parking deck between McDowell, Salisbury, Lenoir, and South streets are usually only there first thing in the morning. They stay longer if something is going on at the Convention Center.

If the attendants are there, it's $7 all day. Otherwise the deck is left open.

There are two entrances on both South Street and Lenoir Street. You have to enter using the entrances closer to Salisbury. Sometimes the entrance on South Street is roped off.

sweet Jesus just fucking drive your car to downtown, find a legal place to park and either bring a bunch of quarters or have money to pay out of the deck. and just walk to the capitol, nothing in that area of downtown is out of walking range, unless you're really fat or lazy.

this is NOT that difficult.

Click around. The MAX you'll pay is $8. Don't know where you're getting 10hrs and $20...

How about you drive downtown and see what restaurant/bar parking lots are near the courthouses you need to go to? Still...the MOST you'd pay is $8, and that's if you're there from 9am-5pm.

How do you afford gas?

However you afford gas, cop some money from that budget and use it to fund this little parking thing you have to do.

If you cannot afford to do that, get a crap job. Work at the bookstore or something so you have enough money to park a car which you can somehow afford to drive/own/insure, but not park.

[Edited on February 6, 2010 at 12:52 AM. Reason : Otherwise get a friend who will drop you off downtown and pay them gas money.]

because it is definitely difficult to tell the flow of traffic and/or read street signs in downtown Raleigh.
